Return Us to the Light
Take me back to a simpler time,
To a time before the touch of man;
A time before cars and telephone lines,
When Mother Earth still held command.
Take me back to a simpler time,
Long before the wars began;
When bird held dominion over sky
As fish, in water, swam.
O' how the times have changed,
Since the rise of modern man;
We stole dominion from the birds
From the fish, and from the land.
We stole dominion from eachother,
With bombs and guns at hand,
And sacrificed our brothers
Just to conquer foreign lands.
We built our cars, planes, and trains
As we paved our paths across this planet;
Clearing forests to and fro,
Until the Earth could hardly stand it.
Will we expend the Earth of all it's worth?
Or will we cease our selfish ways?
Will we eradicate this world,
Or will we make a change today?
May we set aside our differences,
As we stand together in this fight
To protect this precious planet,
And return us to the Light.
To a time before the touch of man;
A time before cars and telephone lines,
When Mother Earth still held command.
Take me back to a simpler time,
Long before the wars began;
When bird held dominion over sky
As fish, in water, swam.
O' how the times have changed,
Since the rise of modern man;
We stole dominion from the birds
From the fish, and from the land.

And return us to the Light.

Thank you for that incredible compliment, friend! I'm truly honored that you were so moved by my poetry, and that you've taken the time to express that to me. It is something which I am deeply passionate about: that is, wildlife and nature in general.
I can be quite cynical, but I also have hope. Mankind is not all bad, in fact, we are capable of much good, and can accomplish many incredible things. But would the health of the planet be better without us? Probably so.

Very true, sunset. We can only prolong the inevitable. Nevertheless, my conscious won't let me sit idly by.
I guess that's just what we do when we love something. We do everything within our power to protect and cherish the things we love in this world. I really do love this planet: the plants, the animals, the people, and all of the incredible beauty to behold... I'll hang on to these things as long as I can! 😊

Unfortunately I think people are getting more divided. The more we respect ourselves, the animals and planet, the better we all would be. Though the greed for power is too great.
Awesome poetry, friend.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? We can only hope for more unity amidst these troubled times. We are all stuck here together, so we may as well learn to live peacefully together, eh?
I truly appreciate your heart felt comment... It means a lot! 😁

Dear NB,
Lovely work. You have painted a canvas of evolution that feels part prayer, part history with an ending of hope for the future. For me, I’m not so sure it was simpler but it surely seems the world was less chaotic and a lot less uncivilized. A wonderfully written piece full of insight and fantastic reminder to appreciate what the earth and nature can provide if we let it. H🌷

Re. Return Us to the Light
honestly poems like this are worth tears because even a heart that may appear to be completely made of stone(a numb heart) should be vulnerable enough to feel this.. I feel this. I love this. hearts like yours gives this world a glimmer of hope

loved the way you progress in verses & structured stanzas...of the devolution of the destruction we are crashlanding...
the so-'selfish genes' of our soullessly modernistic oversmartness tumbling towards nothing but apocalyptical darkness... the straight talking, the imminent immediate call towards going back to the roots, to our simplistic ways, to Nature..towards Light..is fantastically appraoched. heard. strong poetic message ..of do or die almost. brilliantly done NB, light & love :)

This one reminds me of a Sara Teasdale poem, about World War I: https://poets.org/poem/there-will-come-soft-rains Of course everyone wants to live in the past until they realise that there’s nowhere to get painkillers. Seriously, though, this was an enjoyable expression of that yearning for simplicity in us all.

Amazing relatable piece NB!
I enjoyed reading this so full of truth
"Take me back to a simpler time,
To a time before the touch of man;
A time before cars and telephone lines,
When Mother Earth still held command.
Take me back to a simpler time,
Long before the wars began;
When bird held dominion over sky
As fish, in water, swam. "
Hell yes I would gladly go back, though I'd probably bitch quite A bit and I'd have to learn so much shit as I'm completely dependant on every modern convenience there is lol but yea it seemed like such a better way to live compared to how we do now, like yea we have all these things to "improve" or "enhance" or make life easier which is great and all but idk we're kinda fucked I think lol but as you said in this comment "I can be quite cynical, but I also have hope." Same I hope for a future where we can sorta mix both worlds in some way if that's possible it might be too late but I'd like to live that way one day
Great piece! excuse this long ass comment haha

Hunter,
There are no apologies necessary for your lengthy comment, I quite enjoy what you have to say most of the time, heh.
I'm so glad that you were able to relate to what I am saying here. I completely agree with what you're saying as well; we are all dependent on these modern conveniences to some extent. I think it's led to a society of mindless and unappreciative behavior. We didn't think about the cow we sacrifice for our burger when we drive through at Wendy's... Or all of the waste that it produces.
We don't think about what we're promoting when we eat that burger...the deforestation required to make more land for cattle, the gases emitted by both our cars, and the grazing cattle, or yhe billion dollar corporate giants who continue to get richer, widening the divide even further, between the rich and the common man.
Must of us don't stop to appreciate all of the work that went into this machine... We just reap the benefits of early man's accomplishments.
We don't take the time to consider how far we've come, and how easy we all really have in this modern day.
Anyway, thanks so much for your input. It's good to see you here!

I agree with you there, these political 'establishments' that we have in place stand as a divisive tool... By grouping and categorizing people into these groups, we are, in a sense, dehumanizing the individual. This leads to a sort of 'guilty by association' type attitude; a prejudice, so to speak. We no longer see an individual; instead, we make assumptions about individuals based on their beliefs, and erroneously group them into these tight-knit categories...
We dehumanize them before we ever even get to know the individual. It's a shame. We never even give them a chance. And this idea goes far beyond the scope of politics... Religion, race, ideas, lifestyles. It's easy to jump to conclusions about people.
I think humanity is going to have to break this divisive way of thinking before anything is going to get better... One step at a time.
Anyway, I appreciate you stopping by to share your sentiment as well. Thanks so much, PoetSpeak!

this is so insightful of what mankind has done to what was never touch by man for it would be a wonderful thing if only man could return back the land the way it was meant to be but we know that will never happen due to greed nature is a beautiful thing indeed like in the forest were animals use to roam free the fishes swim in the creeks and the seas nicely composed...respect

Good writing. Lots of things to think about. I feel technology, science, and our thirst for knowledge and our choices in the 20th/ 21st centuries have backfired and overwhelmed us. Yet, progress in the form of technology I'd essential to every day living.

Re: Re. Return Us to the Light

It is essential in our society, but there are people in certain areas of the world in which I'm sure people would disagree. First-world problems, maybe? Lol.
There is definitely a yin and a yan when it comes to technology. We all have a choice how we use as well. We can either drone out to a reality show, or learn calculus online; The choice is in our hands... Literally.
Anyway, I'm glad that you enjoyed this poem, Lozzamus! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Dear NB,
It's a very beautiful and realistic poem. All these problems are caused by man's selfishness. When each man thinks less of himself, all these problems will disappear.
