Duty
As I sit here on duty today
All is quiet, no one has anything to say.
Maybe I'm going deaf, am I no longer able to hear?
Or maybe it's because NO ONE is even here, but probably at home drinking a beer.
Maybe it's safe to say that sitting here for 8 hours is pointless, no one comes or goes
But it is our duty, which must be followed, as all military personnel knows.
Whether a Sailor on the pier, on the quarterdeck, or possibly on roving patrol
Or maybe a Marine, standing guard in fearful places others see as a hellhole.
Duty is duty, and part of what we swore to do, never said it would be fun
And we cannot leave our post, until our watch is completely done.
My watch does not end until 1400, so here I will stay

Its always interesting to see inside the mind of a soldier.. my brother is in the army and he doesent open up about it much.. actually not at all. I'm lucky to get a letter back. I wish u well in your duties sir, and I hope ur loved ones keep in touch. Never stop writing..

kourtnissixxx, thank you very much! In my opinion, I believe the Marines and Army are a bit more reluctant to open up to their career, as they endure more of the gruesome ordeals. However, it differs for every person. If I may ask, how long has he been in, and what is his rate?

he's only just begun. He left for boot camp a few months ago so he doesent have a rank I think (I could be wrong though).

Thank you for breaking down stereotypes and reminding me that people can not be put into a labeled box. I come from a military family and want to believe I understand the sacrifice made, but I really don't. Thank you for sharing your perspective. I loved your line about being deafened by silence. Kudos
