Substance
I.
I write to you beneath a canopy
of a Code Red Air Quality Alert
ashen smog you're breathing
has escaped down wind to us
A piercing hypodermic syringe
punctures inhalation efforts
with an extended heartache
trying desperately to evacuate
Yet my blood readily accepts
traces of your exhaled breath
into the cavernous gorge
of discomfort separating us
II.
I dreamt smoke inspired you
the oily plume of feather
upending you unto its pinion
before leaving me suspended
In a serenely chaotic oxymoron
beneath a new moon evening
- - so countless in promise
so starless in substance - -
~
Authors note: Nearly 46,000 acres total have already burned across the Blue Ridge."Crews are still fighting what is being called the most dangerous wildfire in the mountains and the second-most critical fire in the nation." Pray for our mountains, pray for rain, pray for those working around the clock to contain the flames. And if you don't believe, pray anyway.

I am not a praying man, but I am sending
prayers to everyone concerned with the
major catastrophe in the making. Those
having to breath the toxic air, the ones trying
to stop the advancing fires. Everyone be safe.

This is a beautiful piece. Thanks for writing this piece. I am not a praying type of person either, but my thoughts are with those people who are dealing with this and for that sacred land.

let's hope the fire service
gets it under control very
soon.

never thought I'd pray for
rain, but on this occasion

Nearly 1,600 firefighters from all over the country are assisting with this fire, Paul. They've flown in from as far as Alaska. It's a starving beast that hasn't eaten in a while.
I am sorry I couldn't get your mountain out in time. I greatly appreciate your prayers - and I know they do too.

What a tragedy to lose so much beauty. I too, have seen this loss first hand in previouse years and it weighs heavy with me. It was called, Firestorm, and I hope to never expirience the wrath of such loss again in my lifetime. I truly sympathize with all involved, you did an amazing job expressing the loss that comes with it and I wish all the best...

Thank you. It's the only way I know to release emotions that they not eat me alive.
It's devastating, Kasai. A few years ago Mt. Mitchell suffered great loss due to lightening. That is understandable, though still sad, when nature selects deforestation. But now over 40,000 acres lost because of either human negligence or a blatant arsonist? It's beyond tragic.

Thank you, Danny. The photo isn't mine - it's watermarked at the bottom though you may not be able to see it. This fire was the result of human negligence or an arsonist, not a natural occurrence. That's what makes it so sad.
We're going to tray and make a run Saturday as far as we can get with some supplies.

I think you might have meant to say breathe instead of breath in line 3 of stanza 1. The image of a syringe is potent. Your close brings the heartbreak of the tragedy across to me, that you are feeling the loss and devastation, but choose to close with an image of endless possibility and hope. I will pray fervently for an end to the destruction. Hang in there.
