King of the cave
Long is my lust for sleep
when winter does creep
hibernation is the name of the game
but not everyone plays it the same
in the spring you can find me at the river
using my sharp claws to deliver
a tasty meal of salmon or other fish
when it comes to food I'll take any dish
campers usually prefer I stay away
but sometimes their food brings me their way
it's silly the reputation I have received
if you believe me evil you've been deceived
although I will protect my cubs with my life
usually I do not look for strife
so if you...

Crab
Red hard shell
Legs that scuttle away fast as hell
claws that can break even if I never shall
the shallow pools feed me and my pals
you'll see me in my sandy kingdom no doubt
because the summer sun always finds me out
though it's true I have a bad reputation
I understand my crusty station
I do not try to be greedy
even though my legs always feed the needy
I am the king of this hill
and like the rain, being here I always will.

For My Kids and the souls I let down
I can't sleep tonight
I'm having flashbacks
seeing beings I let down in one way or another
tears streak down my face knowing I failed them
I've spent most of my life disconnected
not fully there
I neglected my kids
failed them utterly
it hurts in a way I can't fathom
I can barely touch the pain of it
it seizes my heart with such sorrow
I was a very young mother
and didn't know what I was doing
it seems I let everyone down
my beloved fur babies as well
failed to protect them from themself
I pray...

January 2024: Haiku/Senryu
Attic squirrels
please rest, relax, hibernate
keep it down up there
World peace is achieved
one loving soul at a time
siblings are we all

[No. 9 from The Children’s Collection]

instrument is essential to the complementary and harmonious playing
of the whole.”―J. Boone

Shelter
If I was to die today,
what would I want to say
other than let me come back rich
so I can shelter every dog, cat, and fish
giving them the life they deserve
and helping to finally preserve
my peace of mind
deep in the shelter of love is where you'll find
that I have at last, been born the best
helping the helpless to find rest
and to never have to be alone again
only truly will I fly free then.

Speaking crow
Crow sits on a branch
black eyes, tilting his head
as wind rustle leaves
hanging on to winter
bleeding itself out
observing flesh
dressed in cotton
walking along his
path in silence,
drinking in faces
as remembrance
while grooming
mangled wings
from ambush
after ambush
that's how crow
commands your
flesh before him,
you'll hear no
caws calling
out from his
sharp beak
he demands
only to be felt.

For My Mate’s Cat
Goodnight, sweet Ming,
you were a splash of marmalade
on this our dry and toasty world.
Some olive garden outside space
is now seeing your tail unfurled.
We’ll miss you this coming Christmas,
but know, that cats like you
make inside fires glow.

Rats.... An Observation
I call them King and Queen
2 rats that live near me
Been seeing them for a year
Mornings when I walk my dog
They don't bother anyone
They just forage for food
Big but not scary
They startle when you cross paths
They are part of my neighborhood
Live under the Chinese Laundry
Funny how they became a poem
Think I should name them
Good Morning Marlon
Good Morning Audrey
Wonder if you were humans past ?
Payback in the afterlife

Dobermann
My girl stood sixty seven centimetres
but I remember my girl when she was a baby,
her paws stumbling around the place as her
docked ears stand to attention
it was a small place but we managed, meaning my bed became her bed, every night she curled in a ball listening to a ticking clock emulating her mothers heartbeat, I slowly becoming something of a mothers warmth as her eyes closed dreaming of her next walk
in return she taught me a great deal more,
my fearless guide to the point of no...

nightmusic
There is music in the air, music all around us; the world is
full of it, and you simply take as much as you require.”
—Edward Elgar
night’s keen baton keeps perfect time,
to suck lithe rhythm and pastel rhyme
from heav’n’s nocturnal stores.
shrill crickets play their piccolos,
the bamboo—flutes the warm wind blows,
that echo on the shores.
owl bugles from dark caverns shoot,
as though, wide-eyed, they gave a hoot
who answers to their whoo?
frog tremolos at cadence-points
the evening’s gaiety anoints...

The Loss
The loss of a pet
hits harder than you expect
when that little soul departs
for the rainbow hill in the sky
you are left with an emptiness
a pain like nothing you have experienced.
An ache so intense
it creates a void in your heart.
But as the days pass
memories start to patch it up
and eventually the chasm becomes a hole.
Stuffed with beautiful comforting moments.
When you remember how intensely they loved you,
how they were a part of your family
as surely as humans are.
