Nothing Did Compare
"It's been several hours now,
since you went away" ...
From the very first moment
my teenage self laid eyes upon
her fierce unapologetic beauty
I was immediately
mesmerized.
Forever changed.
It dawned on me, that if this
perfectly imperfect
romantic waif of an Irish lass
could challenge and rile up
long standing institutions
with her staunch convictions,
speaking out/up for what she believed in
unwittingly becoming
this hauntingly gorgeous voice—
A voice she didn't necessarily want
or even like having in the spotlight
but still spoke out anyway,
than there was this enormous possibility
for any and all young woman
who were about to take on the world... as well.
She single handedly
instilled a sense of self driven raw power
and stood for something
in a time and in a way
where that was almost non-existent
from anyone in rock/pop, much less a woman...
And let me tell you, I fucking paid attention.
Thank you, Sinéad.
Safe travels amidst your last journey, dear lady. I hope two souls will rest easy upon reunion with your darling boy.

An amazing tribute for an amazing person. I remember the first time I saw her and I was so struck by her beauty, and then when she sang…
She will most definitely be missed. I just had to listen to “Nothing Compares 2 U” after I read this.

Thanks for feeling her music along with me today. It's such a gut punch to lose someone I admired like this from my youth. It's yet another time that I feel way too young to have this sadness happen. Despite whatever the reasons may be for her passing, her music and the bold unashamed way Sinéad chose to live her life will always leave a huge impression.

A special one indeed. I loved the way she dared tear up the pope's pic..as in fuck you, Jack.
That's right.
And given the time frame of her doing that, she had serious balls of steel. She paid a huge price for standing against the church and it's horrendous lack of accountability against those sex offenders they protected. Not only was she proven right about all that awful cover up, she was browbeaten and booed for taking a stance, back then.
She was stronger than most gave her credit for.

I can appreciate anyone's ability to speak their truth, even if it's brutal to hear or I don't agree. (even being a former catholic I applauded her actions then) Her ripping up the pope's pic on SNL was an act of knife searing civil disobedience and her way of showing the absolute disgust she had to the then very hidden way that the catholic church dealt with sex abuse of children. Not only did time reveal her as being spot on for that, she was originally deemed a monster and booed repeatedly for her actions. Her response was to sing 'War' by Bob Marley even louder, acapella.... That's what having a spine and some serious balls looked like. Damn, what a badass.
Despite her personal politics and ideology, her voice and gumption made her shine with an exquisite brilliance. I adore Prince, find him to be a masterful musician and singer yet, no one could have sung his song better.... period. It placed her forever in music history, love her or hate her.
I probably think it might have been self harm, which fucking sucks but that's not what I'll remember. She was and will remain an icon and resonant part of a time that needed her bravery. I for one, am so glad she was there to brandish it.

It's so painful to lose those touchstones to our youth. It's a lesson that I've learned many times with so many others before but it never stops impacting me, just how precious it all is.
Kick as much ass as you can while you're here because you never know what tomorrow brings. 'There but for the grace of God go I'

I remember watching her video for the first time. No distractions were needed.
Just a close up shot of her face and those beautiful eyes and lashes.
They came across so vulnerable.
Her face was so feminine and that voice was such a powerhouse.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely input. It truly is a colossal shame to have her gone so young. Having been a fan of hers since my youth, it does my heart good to see the outpouring of respect and loyal adoration from other fans who never faltered with their fandom, despite whatever media platforms out there splashed their headlines with in regards to her hardships battled later in her career.
I read a piece by Morrissey the other day, who railed against all of the love and appreciation that people are sharing for her across the globe, basically saying it's disingenuous bullshit and is only due to her death... asking, "Where we we when she was alive?" And I wish he knew like I hope she did—We, her fans, have always been here... period. We play her music and sing along like we too, have those kinda pipes and that kind of everlasting gumption.... and we will always continue to.

For me anyway that didn’t make it any easier. I found it quite hard to listen to het music for a longer time at a time. But she always touched het listeners. Marvellous rolemodel.
I’m not the only one to going to have to miss her.

Wonderful tribute. Yes, all of us Gen X'ers growing up in those times came to discover more about the world through artists like her who stood up for something and made their voice heard.
