POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I am new to the enjoyment and writing of poetry. In public school and high-school, I didn’t appreciate poetry and frankly didn’t understand it. Now I can’t seem to stop writing, reading, experiencing and enjoying poetry.
1864
Welcome ladies,
It is 1864 in Arizona
and
you have no rights to your bodies.
Unless,
of course,
you are going to die.
The Good ‘Ole Party of 2024
is
just fine with statutes from the 1800s.
Good,
wholesome
laws!
Family
values
laws!
Moral laws!
No legislative debate permitted
on an archaic law
that makes you a baby factory.
Because,
It is a good law.
Raped,
you will live
and carry a rapist’s child
Incest,
you will...

Petting a Dog
You join me on the couch
Curled up in your favourite spot
With one of your people
Petting you is supposed to be relaxing
Often I can’t find the relaxation
Petting you consciously
Like a task to be completed
Tonight is different
Finding the relaxation in the texture of fir
Softness of your ears
Absentmindedly petting your head
Playing with your floppy ears
Finally finding elusive relaxation
For both of us

Women’s Rights
A zygote is a person
you say
In or out of the womb
God’s creation
you decree
So has rights!
Already a person
Until they are born
[a woman]
then
rights dissolve
[because its a woman]
A woman’s rights are now
dictated
by
another’s religion
Rapist’s conceptions
have more rights
[than the woman]
A fetus that won’t live
has more rights
[than the woman]
A baby, dying in the womb
has more rights
[than the woman who grieves and may die for the life...

Do you want to colour?
Do you want to colour?
A question from your childhood.
Crayons spread across the table
the floor
Whatever paper is handy
Blank
A colouring book
Covering the pages
Diligently staying within the lines
Freedom of a blank page
No matter
You were creating
Something
Choosing the perfect colour
From a carefully sorted box
Or
From a pile of half-spent broken pieces in a candy tin
Grinding into the paper to create a solid form
The unmistakable smell of crayons
The...

Stela I and Stela II
Planted in your courtyard
Under the oaks
Bound by the backs of buildings
pedestrian paths
falling into disuse.
For now,
no longer a convenient route
The rain falls and the sun sets
Shadows of bare winter branches.
In your crowded courtyard
perhaps you see a glimpse
of pink and red sunsets
reflected from clouds overhead.
How do you and your sister pass the time?
Growing old with the oaks
Are you lonely without people to gaze upon you?
As a monument,
I assume you were created to be viewed...

US Department of Justice call Uvalde police response a failure in highly critical report
Shift guilt
Blame others
In an official report
The police response
the proximate failure.
Failure started long before
The power of the gun industry
NRA lapdog lobbyists
Political propagandists
Conspiracy theorists
Holding the country hostage to
A flawed amendment
Failure of a country,
failure of a society,
failure of politicians,
failure of congress,
failure of the judiciary

Hate Disguised as Love
You love the unborn
with all your heart
Until they are born
Become people
And sin
Enforce your version of biblical morality
on those that you claim to have once loved unconditionally.
Now there are conditions
for those who are
gay
unmarried and pregnant
made a mistake
unwilling to carry a rapists child
pray to different gods
whose mind and genitals don’t align.
You demonize
torment
vilify and degrade
those
who were once so easy to love
What...

Ode to Her
You take the time to
read my words
breathe them in
Sights of the morning
rain on my face
ice on the lake
trees on the shore
grey clouds
and
pale blue skies
To let me know
they help you find joy
in the little things
You tell me that my words
have meaning
impact
make connections
More than pretty pictures
Thank you
read my words
breathe them in
Sights of the morning

Morning - January 3
Inhaling cool air heavy with moisture
Grey clouds
revealing fragments of a pale blue sky
dappled with pink and white
of early morning light
