To the stars wherever they may shine

My feet sink on the barren
beach with thousands
of silver and gold grains
of star dust beginning to
cover my ankles as Ziggy
plays guitar in my ear buds .
I look to the heavens
longingly at the glitter
of dozens of constellations
I never knew intimately .

I remember this guy
in high school told me
how he met the thin
white duke in a bar
in Germany and he was
as gracious a gentleman
as you could imagine
buying him a beer.

And the first girl
I ever loved beyond
a schoolboy crush,
a sweet singer
of show tunes ,
assured me Aladdin
Sane had a great
singing voice.

I pull my legs out
of the swallowed turf
and run from the rising
waters of the midnight
tide following the footprints
burned into the sand
from the stars above
to dance with my muse
on higher ground.
To dance with my muse
in a ballroom brimming
with a beautiful sound.
