The Perfect Place To Die

( Rensaku: linked Tanka )

1) Aokigahara Dream

this belov’ed sight
I’ve grown up with a lifetime,
even out at sea
helping Father mend his nets—
he and brother haul a catch

lurching from the waves,
thoughts of late spring pilgrimage
family outing days—
tossing back the smaller fish
before we set sail for home

early next morning,
Mother’s honored sisters come,
cherished reunion—
helping prepare the lunches
when we honor Fuji-San

Father’s ‘Buddha’ truck
loading for the trip, and us
packed just like sardines—
off we go with happy shouts,
Yamanashi Prefecture!

2) In Mount Fuji’s Shadow

honored sisters sing
old tradition travel songs—
men on bicycles
smile and wave as we pass by
watching glancing scenery

Father nodding head
in time with sisters’ singing,
brother Yoshi grins
as Mother leans, turns around
focusing through camera lens

and when we arrive,
the forest, black, forbidding
where no sun enters,
of bones dangling from branches
and no life leaves after dark

we walk the thin trail,
it fades where thick roots tangle
when time and rain caught,
o’er layers of eruption
the humid breath and strangle

I haven’t seen them,
anyone, since darkness fell,
and only silence
what I hear and cannot tell
if I died or everyone

3) The Black Sea Of Trees

costs of being old
the elderly forgotten—
abandon a soul
having done what love dictates
for the chance to die in bed

and the lovers flock
like two birds of a feather,
for they too are mocked
as the end, their tragedy,
never knows eternity

hoops of braided hemp
as if trees make offerings—
the death po’ms of monks,
scratched out kanji on tree bark
of sentinels’ no longer

a single bird call,
rustlings of its floundering—
in which direction
did it make its last mistake,
‘fore once again a calming

4) The Suicide Forest

as the forest stands,
forever firm in lava
regurgitated
a millennium ago—
storing its own in the caves

trespassers no more
and the volcano is stilled,
snow cap is unchanged,
with the belly of the beast
bulging till more come again

to honor dark spawn,
to consecrate the mother,
the roots with their blood—
and even they are all gone
In the fires of Fuji-San

Swing

I pass it on the way
as I start the day
it hangs frayed
crestfallen
from a
wide
oak

Each
time  I
have to ...
quickly glance
hoping to chance
upon some girl at play

Feet kicking to the sky
never asking why
her ride always
must end
without
me

A horse called West

There was an infinite horse called West
He cantered Stallion chest
Heaving, thrusting forward
Beads of salted sweat
To the throttled floor
And hardened salt bed flats
With gifts of pound and precision
The grand machinery of nature
Without untimely death
To reign the beast in

Mortality can appear a noose
Even when the hangman has just cause
And the look of a saint
Beneath his dark hood

West had no knowledge
Of discourage

opposable thumbs were not in his
Chocolate brown make up
His eye dipped
Creamy and soft
If you stared into them
He might appear
To gaze back
Like a lover

Ready and willing
For care and soft
Gentle caress
He might appear to be
But would not stop
A break neck pace
Towards....

For kind things and touch

But for Omega
He had no vision
No need or desire
To hinder him

He was
As well
Without desperation
He was.....

Just as well

Another horse
Would halt him two foaled
And creation would bring the East
And a certainty

He had yet to see a sun rise
Nor see a sun set

Dream

I fell into a deep sleep
And dreamt of visions untold
A land as far as my eye could see
Covered in rubies and gold

The trees would sway within the breeze
Dancing back and forth
Whispering secrets into the wind
A tale of ancient lore

And as I began my approach
To the city beyond the golden sea
My ears were pierced by a horn
As loud as it could be

The land began to tremble and shake
And stars began to fall
The amber sky turned dark gray
Seemingly to answer the horns call

The golden city where rubies abound
Started sinking into the sea
And a booming voice from nowhere
Demanded that I leave

It was with this that I awoke
Puzzled by this dream
Just what it meant, I have no clue
Sometimes a dream is just a dream.

A flight of fancy

Once upon a time
in a land where sleep is banned
I would sit upon the telling chair
 entrance you with a tale
pin back your ears whilst I regale
In that Noslumberland
don't rub your eyes
my precious child
there lived a bird that could not fly
 gawky ostrich long and lanky
and his name was Fancy
for he was mute and could not squawk
 he employed an umbrella
so he could point
and strut around with dignity
to find the things he might require
perhaps some training for a glider
a deposit for a Turkish Carpet
to levitate, on a rug that has no cockpit
try to find some credibility
soar aloft like ancestors could
not just paddle in the sticky mud
and walk around on bony stilts
a puppet, hear the crowd
all  laugh out loud
for he was trapped within his cage
he fumed and glowered with great outrage
that man could fly and he was trapped
so a cunning plan he hatched
just to flutter like a partridge
the lead shot blown from the cartridge
now do not yawn and close your eyes
for this tale holds a surprise
self belief high as an eagles aerie
just to escape that life so dreary
tunnel underneath the wire netting
escape that park of paradise
a chance to find a brand new setting
for next door was big top circus
a brave idea to reach the heights
under cover of the darkness
the brolly underneath a wing
the hook, the end for extra purchase
escape the bonds of trapped despair
brave intentions clarity
to seek the need for parity
 to become the feathered cannon
climb in the bore with gay abandon
and come the time to test the fuse
be discharged into the blue
once airborne spread ones wings and glide
now the chance to soar
terra firma always clamping thee
and each deserve; a flight of fancy
not tire in that pursuit of legacy
just one more verse before you sleep
float down on his open umbrella
say the day had been quite stellar

She Is Just a Woman

Mia holds herself in the darkness of inexperience.
She is a young, chaste sister of the Catholic faith.
He has been admiring her since she attained puberty.
She stares at him whenever he passes the convent.

He can tell that she has a secret craving for love,
But he is too diffident to say something to her.
She flatly rejects the advances of all the other men,
And so he thinks she is not likely to fall for him.

Mia is like a gemstone in a vitrine in a museum.
She is the only daughter of a reputable bishop.
Her angelic beauty catches the author’s eye.
He feels her pain as she smiles to feign happiness.

Her parents are overprotective and self-righteous.
They have indoctrinated her in religious philosophy.
It seems so impossible to win the love of a nun,
But he does not intend to give up without trying.

He beckons her and tells her how he feels about her.
Mia presents firm arguments as he expected.
She boldly expresses her opinion on morality,
And she respectfully defends her Christian beliefs.

She says nobody can contaminate her virtuous mind.
Nevertheless, he discovers a weakness in her heart.
He thinks he can soften her if he tries hard enough.
After all, she is just a woman despite her rectitude.

She had ceremonially vowed to adhere to the rules,
But now she wants to make her own decisions.
He sees an opportunity to manipulate the situation,
And he will try to seduce her one way or another.

It is easier to arouse her emotion than he thought.
She has carnal desires like any normal person.
Her tears are not different from other women’s tears.
She reveals her sadness and loneliness to him.

Finally Mia picks the forbidden fruit and eats it.
Her eyes are open and she wants sensual pleasures.
She starts to do things she had never done before.
And she becomes excessively desirous of his love.

Biblical laws cannot guide her behaviour anymore.
She willingly defiles her purity with extramarital sex.
If she is caught, they will banish her from the church.
Her secret eros proves that she is just a woman.
