Rats.... An Observation
I call them King and Queen
2 rats that live near me
Been seeing them for a year
Mornings when I walk my dog
They don't bother anyone
They just forage for food
Big but not scary
They startle when you cross paths
They are part of my neighborhood
Live under the Chinese Laundry
Funny how they became a poem
Think I should name them
Good Morning Marlon
Good Morning Audrey
Wonder if you were humans past ?
Payback in the afterlife

Domesticated rats would be like any other pet. The street rats run the show and like any Feral creatures it's all about food.

These 2 rats in my neighborhood seem so be in a relationship. They look out for each other. Run fast side by side.
Don't mess with them and they won't bother you. Simple ...

Just like us really, driven mostly by what we consume. Seeing the same ones for a year means their wise rats. Marion is probably well established and loved in the neighborhood.

These two are probably well known as they often travel in pairs. Sometimes it's Marlon only in the morning. I tend to take an abstract view of things so my vision of their worth from a philosophical view might be skewed. Most people on my block are horrified but helpless as to what to do.
They are not interested in people. They're only interest is in thrown out food.
A poet and storyteller needs content so these critters were yesterday's offering ...
Thanks for your thoughts Thor !

Love the names! Makes me think of the regulars I used to see on the bus everyday. Part of the panorama of normal...or whatever is closest

Old fashioned kind of names. Came to be in a Hollywood movie kind of moment circa tye 1940s. Haven't met many women named Audrey lately.
Well now I've done it all. Observing rats and writing their story. No artificial intelligence here ...
Thx Willow

Gotta respect critters just doing what they gotta do. (Except the ones who broke into my house and chewed the wires. That was war, and we won.)

Glad you won.
They will eat anything.
We get field mice in the winter. Nothing I can do but buy peanut butter and humane snap traps. Don't like doing it but they belong outside ... sorry critters

I caught on to the names....
Maybe a "Bogart".
"You dirty rat!".
I'm kinda a spazz in that I am overly observant to literally every single little thing... my head hurts a lot. Lol. But, our world is meant to be observed. It's how we learn and perhaps feel.
Yeah?
I'm also the guy who feeds the feral cats at work. Even though there is a strict policy against it. Fire me. Lol. (Been there going on ten years. I'm safe I think).

hello dearest Poet good evening I love all animals and can appreciate their invidual societies and I still say this even when as a young woman lived across from a dump and had them at pest proportions I still cared how they faired if you watch nature enough it will let you in to their secret societies... that you named them is sweet...rats are tough guys...I love how you see them they are part of your world just like are feral cats are part of mine I really enjoyed this 💕

If I weren't walking my dog at 6am, I'd miss all this wildlife flavor. There's great calm on the morning walk before the hysteria starts.
I'm grateful even for the rats and their local color... Just hope they stay outside..
Many thanks Brenda

What a cool observation. I ran across a baby rat outside at work. It was in a panic
being out in the open - trying to find a spot to burrow in. Poor thing:(
So cute. Haven't seen it since then. Hopefully found a safe spot to hide.
We have a ton of squirrels in our courtyard at work.
They are always scurrying all over the place. Even had one fall from a tree on a friend of mine
during lunch! LOL
Thanks for the glimpse into a day with your little buddies.
Gave me a smile.

They are definitely a misunderstood group of rodents. It's like, I didn't choose to be a rat, luck of the food chain draw. Makes one think too about humanism, can I be a beter person or will this be my fate ???
Thanks for the check in A, always a pleasure.

Once they've been named, they become immortalized in poetry. What rats could ask for more? Aside from maybe more scraps

In observation of these 2 it's all about survival and not getting hit by a car. Their agility to squeeze into slight openings is something of amazement. Could be a reality show on the Rat network. Having had a career at 2 of the major TV networks I'd say they'd fit in quite nicely. Quite frankly I never expected this kind of response to rat poetry but I seemed to latch on to something here.
Kind of like a big chunk of cheese find for either of these mighty souls..

I've always heard about those big N.Y. rats but your philosophical view on a "reincarnated" matter is pretty eye opening.

They are pretty BIG around these parts. Especially by the river. Some big as cats hence the name Water Rats. But my local rats stick to the name. We're on a first name basis ...
