POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Humorist and storyteller, with a dash of lyrical loveliness and an occasional deep thought.
I Had a Porno Dream About Barry Gibb
He's a castrated werewolf
I mean,
based on how he sounds
and how he looks.
Yet for some reason
I had a porno dream
about Barry Gibb,
and I'm here to tell you
he's damn good in bed.
He was kind too
and loving
and for the minute or two I was married to him
I was secure,
sexually fulfilled,
rich
and oh so happy.
I'd never had any kind of attraction
to Barry Gibb,
yet I had a porno dream about him.
And I'm glad I did.
I mean,
based on how he sounds
and how he looks.
Yet for some reason
I had a porno dream
about Barry Gibb,
and I'm here to tell you
he's damn good in bed.
He was kind too

and for the minute or two I was married to him
I was secure,

and oh so happy.
I'd never had any kind of attraction

And I'm glad I did.

Breakfast at Cracker Barrel
I'm facing a wall of guns and deer heads
surrounded by tables of fat Trumpy men in white socks and sandals
our waitress insists that what my friend ordered is mine
and vice versa
finally we just nod
and switch plates once she walks away
I love the rubbery country ham
my scrambled eggs taste like water
but damn they know how to do grits
not many places do
I dip the edge of my pancake bite prissily
into a tiny pool of maple syrup
my diabetic friend douses his
until the carby orbs are practically floating

Alive So Many Times
People kill themselves over financial loss
I chose to work harder
People kill themselves over lost love
I got over it
People with complicated brain chemistry have a high suicide rate
I haven't succumbed
People kill themselves over maddening injustices
I wrote more poetry
Close to one million people
die by suicide every year
That could have been me
so many times over
It could have been so many of us
But we're still here
Grateful

Sixth graders watching the Guiness Book of World Records'
longest conga line of dogs
because it's five minutes before dismissal on a Friday
and why not?
Two simultaneous responses
one from a girl
one from a boy
"Aww, it's a puppy choo choo train!"
"Yeah, they's doin' it doggie style"
Cusp of twelve:
the hold of innocence tenuous
against gale force winds

Rules are Roolz
Some rules are good:
no smoking in public places
no littering
no running red lights
no killing people
But some rules are questionable:
insistence on school uniforms
in a low-income school
when mom's been unable to launder navy pants
and white shirts
because dad went to jail last night
or the power was cut off
or because the family of eight has to move again
third time in six months
I'm developing the reputation
as the teacher who doesn't dress code students
(they think I don't notice)

Spin it Black
It was a thing at the time
in tourist towns everywhere
i aligned with it in Gatlinburg, Tennessee
the summer before first grade
my cousin Sue Rose
an old girl of 14
is watching me squeeze condiment bottles of paint
onto the fast-spinning little canvas
round and round it goes
as i squeeze pink and blue and lime green
Sue Rose keeps exclaiming how pretty it is!
for some reason this bothers me
I grab the pointy tipped bottle of black
wrap both of my little hands around it
and give a mighty...

The Art of Forgetting
At my age, my short-term memory sometimes sputters like a dollar store lighter. My long-term memory, however, flares bold and bright. Though I have the requisite sunny happy memories, a few ancient negative experiences sometimes outshine them. Can I really still be bothered by a bad experience in first grade, so many decades ago? Yeah. Watch.
. For the first three months of that year, I was only five. Way too young to be told I suck at art, but that is indeed what happened.
I remember the private school classroom perfectly. Tidy rows of brown desks. Large windows...

Wiener Walk
I bend down to pet the dachshund
because dog
The owner nods her approval
Aww, what a sweetie
my standard sincere statement
about any canine
who doesn't bare its' fangs
and sever tendons in my wrist
He just went for a wiener walk!
the 40-ish blonde woman tells me
Oh...
so, a walk with other dachshunds?
Did I really need to ask that?
Yes,
blonde 40 confirms
He had fun
but it doesn't take long for him to get tired
Yeah, like the men in the age group I'm...

I remember a big room
some central lodge perhaps
empty
a song playing loudly
and not just any song
a song of exquisite joy
Tom Petty's
American Girl
Barely thinking
I step into the song
and I dance
I dance with my long blonde hair flying
l dance like a dervish from a veiled lifetime
I dance with abandon because I'm 22 and want to kill myself
and who cares if I'm foolish
if I don't have to remember it
I dance because I worship music
I dance because I'm a prayer in motion
I dance because...

List #9: Travel Destinations
1. Dubai. I love wealth and the intensity of extremes. I want to ride the world's fastest roller coaster, go snow skiing inside on a 100 degree day, watch Dubai's fountains put the Bellagio's to shame, and, I don't know, maybe ride a camel. Nah. I'll pass on that.
2. Tromso, Norway. Northern most college town in the world. Art. Culture. Polar bears in the streets (not too close, please). Northern lights. Magical, stunning cold.
3. Miami, FL. My homeland. I haven't been to Miami in 30 years. I've been to Boca Raton, Orlando, Jacksonville and Ft. Lauderdale, but for some...

Timely
On my first date
with the dominant man
after he beckoned me over
after I was seated
as i was processing
how attracted to him I was
I asked if I was late.
it was a nervous question
an attempt at conversation
I'm rarely late
usually early
but the coffee shop was tricky to find
and I had rushed there after work...
Two minutes
said the dominant man
Oh!
Two minutes I laughed
looking him in the eye
until i couldn't
I take punctuality seriously
