Lauryn's Date

As they reached her doorstep, Joseph turned to face Lauryn, a gentle smile playing on his lower lip. The night had been filled with laughter, shared stories, and a surprising connection that left Lauryn eager for more.

"Well, Lauryn, I had a wonderful time tonight," Joseph said, his eyes reflecting sincerity. "I'm really glad we bumped into each other at that diner."

Lauryn smiled back. “Me too, Joseph. It was unexpected, but sometimes the best things in life are." Her eyes glanced down at her tummy where one hand rested.

They stood on the doorstep, the moment hanging in the air. Lauryn hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Would you like to come inside for a bit? Maybe have a cup of wine or tea?" Joseph's expression brightened, and he nodded. "I'd love to."

Lauryn fumbled with her keys as they entered her apartment. The soft glow of ambient lighting filled the space, creating a comfortable atmosphere. Lauryn didn’t flip any lights on. They settled into the living room, and Lauryn prepared some tea while Joseph admired the framed baby ultrasound photos on the wall.

As they sipped their tea, conversation flowed effortlessly. Lauryn found herself opening up to Joseph about her hopes and fears regarding motherhood and her struggle with the abortion question. Joseph shared stories from his own life, even alluding to failed relationships from his college days, adding a twist of humor in the process. The night unfolded into a mix of shared laughter and quiet moments of connection.

Eventually, the conversation turned more serious as they discussed their future aspirations and what they were looking for in life. Lauryn felt a growing sense of comfort with Joseph, a feeling that went beyond the initial spark of attraction.

She thought of her professor friend and wondered if he’d be upset that she was dating. But, she thought, he’s a married father and they have no sense of commitment between the two of them other than sexual intimacy.

Lauryn shook her head to come back with Joseph. He was quiet but seemed to treasure the simple holding of her hand.

“You don’t know the half of my life,” Lauryn said, startling herself as she broke the silence.
“You don’t know the half of mine,” Joseph said with a smile and then he looked at their joined hands silently.

As the clock ticked on, Lauryn wondered where the night would lead. There was a palpable chemistry between them, and as Joseph reached over to gently brush a strand of hair from her face, Lauryn felt a spark of something deeper.

Author's Note
I wrote a third person narrative of last night. Purposely left out the conclusion. Maybe that will make another story.
