Two Trees Down
The two trees at the very
end of my walk where I turn around
have fallen from last week’s vicious wind
the wind we feared might rip off
my darling’s brand-new roof but instead
slammed these two to the
sodden earth, the yet living lying
beside the long dead partner
branches intertwined as though
the living unable to let go
of the dead in one long last
grasping embrace.
How many straight-line winds
they must have weathered together
how many seasons of leaves budding,
seedlings loosed upon summer breezes
the riotous colors, the inevitable fall of leaves
they must have shared, limbs so long
trembling side by side, and now
it has come to this.
Yet before I walk on I see that the living
has thirsty feasting roots still
plunging into the rich dark loam of earth
with tiny leaves bursting forth
from multitudes of singing buds
a hosannah of life supported by death
down but not yet done
which is how I hope
the woman I love will be
embraced by memories of me
when I at last fall old and gasping
in Death’s final blow.

What expression and wonderful use of clever metaphoric imagery!! ... You use the awe inspiring beauty and wonder of nature to really accentuate the love two lucky souls can share... It was such a heartening read with the breadth of always and forever, tightly woven throughout the 'hat tip' to all that we should revere via the natural world's offerings.

Ty, B. Your comments always lift my spirits. I am now 78 and my love is 74. We often walk together. We found each other late in life, nearly six years now. Spiritual hug winging its way to you.

I agree I felt metaphors in the sense of nature echoing our own nature, much like haiku. I love the use of the word riotous, I can see it vividly.

Beautifully written MRD. Your grasp of the intricacies of language and of the routinized processes of nature lend to a deeper level of expressing one's thoughts on paper. It gives the reader a more vivid explanation of a written piece and where you as the writer gain recognition as being brilliant.
On a more personal level, you then turn around and bring it back home to where the heart lives. Lovely piece. Thank you.

A delightful poem,
I adore the theme, the devotion is palpable. Death supporting the living is very profound.

I love this. I couldn’t help think that trees communicate to each other through their roots. The trees were still communicating long after they had fallen, just as you and your beautiful darling are/will. Roots are strong. They bind the relationship between trees and the metaphor of those two trees to you and your woman
Is superb. I’m in love with this beautiful poem that illustrates the sustainability of love.
And on a personal note, you know I adore you and your work. Keep writing, please.

I think of you often as you move through a world which is so often blind to the blindingly beautiful which you certainly represent. Keep dancing, keep singing, more wonders are in you.

BK, you are a gift. Seems like every time I’m feeling down and doubting my ability you show up with encouraging words. In Greek the word “angel” is “angelos” and means “messenger.”
Ty for carriying a message of hope which makes you, I submit, an angel.

Hello there.
The metaphor of the two tree being intertwined despite them having fallen is a rich one, especially when talking about relationships. It made me think of this old English folklore story of trees with twisted trunks around each other were called loving trees. It was believed that couples who were forbidden to be together transferred their hidden love into the trees. England is a weird place.
There’s a really nice narrative to this piece. One that I found endearing right through to the end.
Thanks for sharing

Thought-provoking and moving poem that speaks to the cyclical nature of life and death, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring power of memories. It encourages me to contemplate the connections that bind us to our loved ones and the legacy we leave behind.
