Image for the poem A father

A father's love

A father’s love was mine for a time,
But later his heart would roam.
Desires for more than a family’s love
Took him far away from home.

I thought he was my love for life,
Curled fingers inside his hand.
But life would lead me to other men,
Where I surrendered my treasured lands.

I long to go back to that innocent time,
But it will never be so again.
I will follow desires. I’m still my father’s girl.
The lusts of our flesh always wins.

Author's Note
Another painful poem by my daughter as she navigates her eighteenth year. I worry about her choices, but they're not that different from my own or her father's. The photo is an edit from her with her father when he was in her life.
