Front Yard
Tonight I lie under fireflies—
the pre-summer warmth
igniting their brief adult life
Crickets bow-drilling legs
flame auditory mating signals
Deafening cicada chorus
emerging from catacombs
of an earthen temple
Bat frequency
bouncing off prey—
distant thunder clearing its throat
amid a flash of heat
This is how I want to go out:
one swoop—an inferno
of burn; a falling star
granting one final wish;
the old owl in the oak
the stray cat in the wood
that hasn't been caught
deer silhouettes in the front yard—
quietly watching on

Beautiful. I love the way you brought in other spectators at the end. 🙂

Dear A,
Fireflies. Pretty little dancers aren’t they! I really enjoyed each segment of this write. Everything having its place and its say to create this wonderful tableau of nature. A swift and painless passing, I think, is the greatest of all gifts. Especially if you can’t see it coming- then you have no time to ruminate about it. I really enjoyed this evenings observations of natural beauty. Lovely write. H🌷

My spiritually is all tied up in nature, so this poem really impacted me. Very nicely done, my friend and fellow poet!

Nothing says summer like fireflies; I wish to see them more often.
"This is how I want to go out:

An excellent metaphor; wouldn't that be something. I bet it's how Hollywood actors receiving a lifetime achievement award must feel during a ceremony.

Beautiful. There is an incredible, moving power in becoming the object of another being’s narrative, and this captures that. Nicely written.

There is a sense of piece and completion. I think our souls know when we're ready to go, regardless of whatever plans we think we may have, it's like it's written in the stars.
Stunning poetry m'am. Truly stunning.

Wow I don't if I'm sitting right besides or what,
Cause you just took me on a trip of imagination and I can see it all word for word
Great ink

This reminds me of the quiet mornings in late Summer. Still balmy but with the promise of autumn, just around the corner.
