Front Yard

Tonight I lie under fireflies—
the pre-summer warmth
igniting their brief adult life

Crickets bow-drilling legs
flame auditory mating signals

Deafening cicada chorus
emerging from catacombs
of an earthen temple

Bat frequency
bouncing off prey—
distant thunder clearing its throat
amid a flash of heat

This is how I want to go out:
one swoop—an inferno
of burn; a falling star
granting one final wish;

the old owl in the oak
the stray cat in the wood
that hasn't been caught
deer silhouettes in the front yard—

quietly watching on
