The Unhappy Man
along the dusty highway of life
baggage from the beginning
dogged his unhappy self
clinging in his throat and eyes
daring his tears to flow
especially during lonely nights
freedom from guilt was not possible
ghosts of the past haunted his sleep
howling to be heard within his closed eyelids
images of grinning demons tortured him
jumping into his skin in glee
kissing him with poisoned lips
lingering shadows of doubt
merged into his waking hours
nudging his mind, was he insane
or was he living in a world in between
poles in an alternate universe
quaint though it may sound
reigning in his thoughts
straining to look and act normal
trying his best to look natural
until he couldn't bear it anymore
various attempts to die, all failed
wondering why he couldn't end it
X-rayed his brain even
yet nothing strange was there
zymosis was out of the question.

Guilt and doubt are the cause of much misery, points made powerfully in your second and third stanza. But here are the lines that really hit home for me:
reigning in his thoughts
straining to look and act normal
trying his best to look natural
until he couldn't bear it anymore
Such a struggle to keep up appearances! Loved this glimpse into melancholia, even if I did have to look up "zymosis."

I remember a relative who suffered similar symptoms. He was rational one minute and screaming of aliens the next. Thank you for reading me Crowfly I really appreciate you.

Dear Daniel...there is always that element in most of us, isn't it. The unhappiness.

Absolutely. We're all sharing a human experience. I always feel somewhat bad when I am inclined to bad mouth anyone, even if it's just part of my cathartic purging process, because in the grand scheme, we are all one. One of my favorite things to quote on occasion is this latin phrase from Horace, Satires. Quid rides? Mutato nomine de te fabula narratur. It means, Why do you laugh? Change but the name and the story is about yourself.
