In the United States of America , politics is split between the Republicans, also known as the 'Right wing',
And the Democrats, referred to as 'left wing', originating from where the two parties would decide to sit inside the large room where they would sit.
So in America , you will hear expressions such as 'leftist liberal' or ' leaning to the right'. The 'right' is referring to the 'conservative' Replublican party, currently lead by president Donald Trump. During the primary elections of 2016, Bernie Sanders was a charismatic
Candidate running against Hillary Clinton. Both were trying to be the leader for the 'left wing' democratic candidate for president.
So voting for Bernie meant you are a democratic, or 'leftist', thus the play on words, in the example joke 'wasnt right'
