Poetry Contest

may there be dragons

THE YEAR of the Dragon\wood dragon will begin Febryary 10th

Draconic creatures appear in virtually all cultures around the globe and the earliest attested reports of draconic creatures resemble giant snakes. Draconic creatures are first described in the mythologies of the ancient Near East and appear in ancient Mesopotamian art and literature.

Of all the creatures of the Chinese zodiac the dragon is considered particularly auspicious, and the coming Year of the Dragon is eagerly anticipated Chinese aren’t alone in venerating the mythical dragon. We explore its meaning in Japanese, Bhutanese, Nordic and Welsh culture

Other sources state that  Dragons are not reptiles, some say they come from the phoenix legends.

As the above random info from internet sources says, Dragons have roamed everywhere. In this competition write a poem or text about
A DRAGON

please do not use any explicit language or vulgarities

Sage of the Jade Dragon

- Sage of the Jade Dragon -
(Xiánzhě Yùlóng)

In the mountains that rose, to meet the lapis sky…
There, climbed an adventurer, a pilgrim: a warrior.
In the Imperial Court, not a man could ever deny,
His deeds were legendary, and filled with hot fire!
In his youth, he fought in the Three Kingdoms age,
For the land of Wu, the fortunes of the Sun family!
Now he was quiet, contemplative like unto a sage,
As he stole up the high lofty paths: ever so silently.

Along the path, the climber came upon a tiny hut…
Wherein a hermit dwelt, who asked him this query:
“Do you seek to learn something, and journey up?
Or do you seek to erase something from memory!”
But not a word the climber spoke, except for this,
A statement for which the hermit had no answer…
“I have had my fill of war and now I long for bliss.”
And so the adventurer journeyed on, even quieter.

Nearer the summit of the mountain, he came then,
To a tent pitched on a ledge, with a slim path to it.
Within, was the most beautiful of all living women!
She bade the climber relax, and by her side to sit.
“If it is bliss you seek, I can show you ecstasies…
Which will make you forget the evils of old battle.”
But he declined, his truths crossing all boundaries:
“Ecstasy ends, but memories return with a rattle!”

Finally the adventurer reached the mountain’s top,
And there, he found a temple carved of cool jade.
Within was a dragon, which bid him to there stop,
And the dragon’s revelation made him feel afraid!
Mountains upon mountains, each higher than last,
Rose beyond the temple like the bones of a spine.
“Will you climb forever, running from your past?”
And back down the mountain, the man did climb.

He became a gifted sage, in the Emperor’s court,
Writing works, which wise men quoted for years.
Never again did he look to the heavens for sport,
Nor seek to purge himself fully of his mortal fears.
He found bliss, in accepting where he had been…
While creating a future, free from his old burdens.
He thanked the Jade Dragon, who he had seen…
Without him, he would still be climbing mountains!

Emptyoh

Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
that haunts my dreams
and devours my fears
Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
who seduces me with his fiery eyes
and his tail of stars

Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
takes me to fly aimlessly through the skies
and with no destination
that makes me forget everything that is real
and what is divine

Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
that fills me with illusions
and false hopes
that leaves me floorless
and no memories

Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
that consumes me with its icy breath
and its iron claws
Emptyoh, the slippery dragon
that takes me into the abyss
and leaves me breathless
and screaming

Dragon Drained

"Yet still accused of being but a myth, each dragon wisely pleads the fifth forthwith."
-- Draconian Measures in the Prevention of Dragon Extinction

*

On putting dragons one by one to death
soon none would have to mask their dragon breath,
or fight the full benighted feudal knight
in quest of damsels fancied lily-white;
nor would one dragon dead be pressed to eat
medieval folks of past-the-due-date meat,
or be beset by filmdom's mindset set
till ending up a DreamWorks-trained tame pet;
and neither would dead dragons feel the shame
of being Dungeon Masters of acclaim,
or feel the fear on each Chinese new year
while bringing up the dancing dragon's rear --
and no dead dragon yet would need to curse
man's fetish sexual for dragon verse.

Dracon

he cast his words at the heavens
drawing a third of God's stars with his tail or tale
shaking the earth below

woe to the earth

a fiery dragon cursed
elevating his station before his brethren
a mockery, a disagreement shook them

breath of magic
desireth of a woman
she did partake of his seed
giving birth to a murderer
he would make the dirt bleed
his teeth sharp they wail and gnash
a martyrs grief

sipping the essence of humans
drinking the sorrow of man
Dracon to be locked away for a thousand years

Abbadon holds the key to the abyss
who will shed a tear for thee?

A Dragon was He

Born in the fires of ancient magic
comes from the outer realms a winged
wisdom. A beast of serpentine scales
and diamond eyes.

Before the time of Levitation and
flying beyond the span of Tiamat he
soared, talons scarring the god
of the wind.

A dragon was he.

The Dragon King of Yore

when legends were real
and tales lived in majestic worlds
the dragons of fire of ancient tales,
roamed this realm a wonder to behold

there was a Dragon King
a man but a wondrous fearsome sight
whose swords were as wings
that he weld with majestic might

he rode on his horse
leading his army in glorious conquest
throwing men to their knees by force
and pledge their allegiance

but stop he did on his stride
when he saw a maiden fair
that he wanted for his bride
though she wasn't a noble's daughter

his thunder left the sky
his noble head bowed
his crown of flames dimmed
for the woman of his dream

with every beat of his mighty heart
he let his guard down
his swords his armour his helmet
and embraced the maiden

on this moment of love and joy
on this momentary weakness
a single arrow in a flash destroyed
all he was as the dragon King

for love he was vanquished
a single arrow through his heart
if only it was from cupid
it would be an eternal knot.

Descendants

It's Lord of the waters
driftwood, earth
and we ourselves
65 percent plus

Its history is thick
with visions of fire and smoke
flared nostrils and tail
curled as a tendril of hair
ready to whip

yet, it's nature is benevolent

Created from a camel’s head
a deer’s horns
and a demon’s eyes

A bull’s ears
a snake’s neck
and a clam’s belly

A carp’s scales,
an eagle’s claws
and a tiger’s paws

quilted together to create
the Deity that is Dragon
given dominance over weather:
torrents of rain
wind and thunder
storms and tornadoes

emerging from the fog
as a Viking figurehead
crossing oceans
moving the seasons
in its wake

selfless benevolence
mythological unity
representing millenniums
of global history

Cardinal ruler of the East
rising sun, benign guardian
whose image adorns
sacred shrines and palaces

an emblem of Emperors
and noblemen alike

its pulsating force
arises in Spring
blessing the land with growth

and we, its descendants
with an abundantly
rising flood
of prosperity

The Cromlech Eyrie!

Firedrake seething sortilege
of fated doom and wild span
foreshadowing what fears allege
in the proclivities of man...

ogham scraped into stone and bone
the tongue of the creaking tree;
Draco honed...by the wizened crone,
and her north star fidelity
to the precession axis dance
Earth gyration undulation
in the Midgard serpent expanse
of planetary formation.

Look into her eyes and despair
at mortal insignificance there,
in the girasol wither glare...
of dolmen undercroft nightmare!

Of Fire, Power and Strength

In the heart of the mountain
                                                           Lies an ancient mystic creature
                                                   Of fire, power and strength
                                          One can feel the vibration
                                 Of something mighty beyond imagination
                         Of something colossal and intense
Entering a cave by the side of the mountain
      Where a great dragon sleeps
Over treasures, over coins, gold and gems
Along with thousands of bodies in armor
       Defeated enemies
Armies and armies of dead men
I stood quietly in the dark cave
Listening to the giant beast breathe
A hot breath of fire and flame
For under the piles of coins, gold and gems
                    And thousands of dead men
Slept a dragon that could never be tamed
What a sight to be hold
All that metal, silver and gold
Something that can turn a common man into a king
But in my quick and swift retreat
I woke up the great beast
Who roared when spreading his enormous wings

Dragon

To catch a dragon
In times past
One must pass through viridian forests
Of vaulted beech, wide pillared halls of sentience whispering in high speech
No sentence understood, no understanding reached
Go quietly before something comes
Creep silently with sword sheathed
This knight abroad at night faring far into the east
If one makes it past
this peril then upon your quest
You must cross a vermillion desert to progress
Pass empty clay cities and stone God eyes that cannot look
Sands of time shifting underfoot
each step a hour though the sun stays still, each stride a battle of your will
Nine years long, this long bearded hero took
until before you
The last test to pass
Vast violet mountains still to climb
there the serpent sleeps
deep in a cave upon the steepest glass like peak
Be brave strong knight least thy knees go weak
Be ready with the wizard's leash
Alive in your hands as you must sneak
Behold the dragon in it's glory!
sleek hued scales green, red and purple blue like in the stories
sinuous, with powerful limbs and dagger claws
a slumbering terror with pointed tail curled round black wings of folded leather
up now to the beasts monstrous horned head you quickly slip the magic tether
All of this in times past
To rein a dragon
To ride at last
To fly into legends
Is a forgotten art

I See You in My Dreams

Who are you, oh one most high?
With the flap of strong wings, you reach the sky
I am merely a humble woman
Not yet broken, but my light is just a flicker…

Of the fire that used to rage within
Most days I don’t feel comfortable within my own skin
How am I worthy of your praise?
Yet I still follow your illuminated way.

I see you in my dreams
A mighty dragon with a heart of fire
How did this miracle come to be?
I was at rock bottom, but I was raised much higher.

I humbly accept your guidance
This spirituality is what kept me alive
Your presence is more precious than any diamond
You gave me the will to want more than just survive.

I see you in my dreams
A mighty dragon with a heart of fire
How did this miracle come to be?
I was at rock bottom, but I was raised much higher.

I once was a lost soul, but now I’m a dragon
My sacred trinity is now whole; my heartbeat is the anthem
I fight and thrive; I’ve never felt more alive
I can’t wait to fall asleep because I see you in my dreams.

When a Dragon flies

I can hear the beat of black wings
my mind cracks on a tempest wind
I want to breathe the fire it brings.
Find the bars and fix them to my cage
In every open bottle there’s a rage
your in a mess that's already made.

I am and I’ll always be
somethings got a hold of me,
drench my shirt in stale pain
don't let my Dragons rise again

Your fingers tremble on deep water
but you’ve already crossed the border,
bind my hands and let my fists unfold
one more truth that's never to be told.
So let my feet find broken glass
on every test I fail to pass

I am and I’ll always be
Somethings got a hold of me
Drench my shirt in stale pain
Don't let my Dragons rise again

Close your eyes as Dragon’s fly
Keep my hands away from your skies
well dress in Sunday best as we lie
Stretched out thin on beating wings
I beg for your forgiveness.

DRAGONSLYR

THE BEGINNING
(part 1)
The clouds raged in the sky
And the moon illuminated the night
The smoke motionless would lie
And the howling winds would bite

And we were chasing gravity
Only as time pretending to be
Living in our self fulfilled prophecy
By confusing our lies internally

Our chilled bones would shake
And tremor at the ungodly sight
The demonic image would make
Flames filtered throughout the night

The final few who will rule
The warriors and the knights
Burning lives his vengeance cruel
Shell shocked peasants filled with fright

THE BATTLE
(Part 2)
We stand at the pit of hell
Dagger in hand our weapon
In the valley where dragons dwell
And fire thats to hot to step in

His massive tail whips and flails
We seek shelter for protection
Scorching fire when he exhales
Destroying him is our obsession

We climb the rocky scales
Back and forth we sway
When legends become tales
We strike one down to lay

In an enchanted land
Where the sun is the night
We learn to understand
The confusion of our plight

FALLEN FRIENDS
(part 3)
We journey into the forest
And everything was surreal
Frozen from the night time frost
Heart pumping allowing us to feel

Another dragon spotted, we chase
And follow steathly into his trap
Our lives hes trying to erase
Even exchange we'll still swap

He breathes his red singeing flame
It rushes extreme heat near
Killed the others with his aim
Alone I'm left filled with fear

He escapes into the darkened night
As I look at my fallen warrior
Her face is lifeless and ashy white
I  grab the secret spell from her

THE CHASE
(part 4)
Graves waiting ahead
I once again pursue
For now the dragon has fled
A rush I never knew

I follow the trail of fire
And magic chanting I speak
The devils tongue of a liar
Upon his lair I creep

I approach his rocky cave
Knowing my death is also near
This voodoo dance on my grave
Serpents slither away in fear

Here comes a red cloud of death
Out of the tunneled maze
Hold my torch don't lose my breath
Strike it,it helps to light my way

THE CAVE
(Part 5)
I now can see this hidden trail
Searching for evil green eyes
Around the corner I see it's tail
Wiping away my desperate cries

I follow the tunnel feeling empty
So I infuse my adrenaline some more
A sea of raging blood is all I see
The innocence of mine is so unpure

The dark corridor at the end
I follow to the opening there
I look away the dragon descends
Staring down I take the dare

I jump, the air rushing hard
Watching as he swiftly soars
The dragon soon to be scarred
Release the screaming demonic roars

ANOTHER VICTORY
(part 6)
I grab my dagger and thrust
The side of the neck will bleed
This capsule of potion I entrust
Will poison the demon indeed

Quickly he loses all his power
Now motionless in time he's still
My body and mind he once devoured
Opened my eyes and gave free will

I spent half my life chasing the dragon
Lifes addictions are not fair
But even after I fell off the wagon
I still became the dragon slayer

My soul is finally at peace
My mind is free and clear
The worlds evil grip has released
But what happens next is my only fear

REVENGE
(part 7)
I thought i had victored
And the demon was dead
Now knowing I was tricked by her
Nightmares again filled my head

Crashing I hit the dark burning sea
Filled with rage I leave my mount
Unfairly judged by this reality
I look around and double count

Dozens of eyes staring at me
My heart raced i was stunned
My shattered soul thought I was free
I tried to escape but i couldn't run

This nightmare had left me stranded
From the dreams that erased despair
Little did I know I had landed
In the heart of the dragons lair

REALAPSE
(Part 8)
And once again be tempted
By the impulses we can consume
Recovery lives each day tormented
By the chaos of our impending doom

We go through each day unchanged
And numb to the prison we live in
Too dazed we become estranged
Our sins will never be forgiven

So we bow down to our vices
Struggling to get through life
The games the government devises
To shackle our lives with strife

Throughout time and history
We have always been treated unfair
Until we battle the dragons literally
We'll remain prisoners in their lair
