The Sami way
Take only everwhat you need
salmon jump through the rainbow spray
replenishment is guaranteed
Sami's fight upstream to keep their ways
hidden secrets in shades of grey
they listen to the earth and feel its needs
the folk lore in the frost and peat
never feels its love betrayed
sun lifts and its weakness speaks
long shadows creep on lamp oil store
moonscape day last for months not weeks
the moss is thick on the forest floor
the nova glows for sacrifice
sharpened arrows keen the spear
red blood spilt on altars ice
danced appeasements ancestors to revere
bone marrow so cold the autumn fog
pelts are ready to be worn
hibernating spiders in the winter logs
they feel of winters oncoming storms
moon shadow on the glaciers face
groans on rocks the cliff face speaks
carved into a sacred place
riven into spirit that reverberate
the runes were carved in the mother tongue
hewn and shaped by the sayers sooth
and told of battles fought and won
with tools of flint like an otters tooth
twilight tribe hidden nurchured ways
no need to break the secret creed
rock and forest womb today
this indigenous tribes will, wouldn't cave
sharpened spears and a dead reindeer
no anthropologist would condone
they stood in a line grinning ear to ear
to post their picture on a mobile phone

THE COFFEE CEREMONY
Beneath the Northern Lights I partook in a most exotic tasty delight.
Among the Sami’s warm hospitality, I was invited to their sacred coffee ceremony.
Drinking a latte, a culinary rarity it was flavored reindeer dairy.
It was a nutty creamy coffee that any Starbuck Caribou would envy.
While sipping my brew from a wooden birch mug,
That night I forever became friends with the people called the Sami.
At times the Sami people partake in a sacred coffee ceremony. Usually held outdoors, the Sami brew strong coffee in large copper kettles. Wooden birch mugs of strong brew are flavored with chunks of rare cheese made from reindeer milk they call Kridakorn. The Sami believe that those who participate in this ceremony will be friends forever. Though I have never participated in such an event, my Norwegian grandfather did in his youth and said it was the most delicious drink he ever drank in his life. I hope to have a birch mug of it before I die.

Sami Song
Hear the tale of the heart
that’s pure as the falling snow
there in the north the light
there the pale light glow
sing me a song to a passage
of a time when the shaman sing
and the eagles reply
and brother wolves howl
call the warriors of old
once more a dance
of victory on snowy shore
north of the wind
joik me a song of the falling rain
of reindeer in the wild
remember them who live before
time was counted in its ticking
let the children remember
the time of the Sami
when they lived nature
in the pore of their souls.

Sámi av fjellene og havet
(the Sami of the mountains and the sea)
An invisible drone of the Goddess
Of the lights in northern skies at twilight,
Sends swiftly down its single chasing eye,
Racing thru’ the reindeer herds by starlight.
It manages to find them, to choke through
To the arid coastline, to the sea folk
Luring the juvenile who frantic ply
Their skill, haphazard, for the plankton fry.
Who give out with song of the prey’s malaise,
And await, at the ready, the blessing.
Blow the bone whistle — the constant drumming
Blow the bone whistle — the constant drumming
An invisible drone of the Goddess
Of the lights in northern skies at twilight,
Sends swiftly down its single chasing eye,
Racing thru’ the reindeer herds by starlight.
