Blue Moon

August 3rd, 2024

No I was not outside looking up at the night sky
I was in my bedroom trying put the child to sleep
But I forgot the neon lights would catch her eye
A curiosity awakened her instead of counting sheep

I tried to reason with her and spoke to her with logic
But she was more interested in the colorful lights
Then smiling at me like I was some kind of comic
Pleading with her as it was getting late into the night

And when the hue turned to my favorite color blue
She sat up and stared at them again as if in a trance
Her little pig tails up in the air like she heard a Who
Trying to stand, bouncing like she wanted to dance

“Luna,” said I, “this is not the time to jump and prance
It is way past your bedtime and grandpa really is tired”
But she looked at me as if saying “nope, not a chance
I am young, I am strong, I am woman and I am wired”

But after giving her a bottle the girl finally settled down
As the soft neon lights continued to soothe the room
And so it was that I finally heard the familiar sound
A peaceful sleeping child when I said...good night Moon
