Biscuits

so much depends on coffee biscuits
that I hoovered up as a kid
attending my nan’s conservative club
before the smoking ban

they were those little rectangular biscuits
with etchings of a cow in a farmyard on them

and they distracted me from all
the clouds of thick tobacco smoke
puffing out from gaps between
gnarled fingers capped with yellow nails

like steam belched up from volcanic fissures -

of course nothing depends
on those little biscuits really

it’s just a memory of mine
