Image for the poem I

I'm adopting Onyx next week, I already love her, we had our first encounter with a chicken bone this morning

New dog
Been 6 years since Ginger passed
Some people get a new dog in a few weeks
I mourned for 6 years
I'm still mourning but time helped me get here

You see my wife loves dogs incredibly
They love her, she walks and trains them some
Dogs love me too
Ginger put a good word in for me
I thought I had the whole dog experience with her

Until a month ago when my wife stood inches away from me
In a firm voice I don't hear often
She proclaimed
I need a damn dog
It was then I knew I was cooked

As luck would have it a dog around the corner needed a home
A rescue from Texas and a bundle of love
The foster mom gave us full access
Walks, visits, teaching her to climb stairs
We put in our application

We are fostering on a one week trial
We will adopt her on 12/27
She's got quirks and fears
Won't go through doorways
Licks my face when I get close

Making progress daily
I do the early morning walk
Today she snared her first chicken bone
Stuck my hand in her mouth and shook her head
She dropped it, there will be more, part of the gig

Author's Note
Onyx is a 4 to 5 year old Greyhound / Pointer mix. Pulls like a
motherfucker.  Ginger was a Pointer / Rottweiler so I know the instincts.  Garbage, urine and chicken bones are their Love Supreme.  I'm here to love, serve and protect ...
