Apples and Oranges
What is war?
Well, it's like an Oreo
and chocolate chip cookie
arguing over whose chocolate tastes better
because they're different;
or, an apple and orange
fighting for control
of the fruit bowl
But why?
Because each one thinks
they’re the fruitiest of the lot
Are they?
Tell me what you think
I think they make me sad
‘cause I like them all so much
See how smart you are?!
Can I have a banana now?

Too precious! The world is in good hands if there are more children like the one in this poem.
And excellently written for the youngster's to absorb.

Lately my #1 rule has been no controlling each other, emotionally or otherwise. Instead of surface goals, I go for intent. Instead of criticizing, we try to always phrase ourselves in words that are sting-free teachable apples.

Exactly - Jess; learning is an experience that will be remembered far into adulthood. It's very important to teach at a child's level of learning.
Thank you!

With an ever increasing human population the Earth's resources will continue to dwindle...water shortage and soil degradation will only grow worse...tribalism will grow more intense and wars will escalate...1+1=2.
But I do believe as John Gray points out in his brilliant 2003 text, 'Straw Dogs', that this beautiful planet will survive the "Homo Rapien" problem...mother nature...the Tao...is using climate change to heal itself...the Tao moves in mysterious ways...and doesn't care about us. Powerful and gentle poem Ahavati...beautiful my friend.
Balance & Harmony...Harry

Thank you, my friend! The earth existed before we did and will certainly survive us! Climate change is so very real; I don't understand the ignorance behind those claiming it's not. It's almost like saying the earth is flat!

one of the few entries that a five-year-old could understand. but the best part for me is that the narrator asks the child their opinion. that's so valuable, to engage and not just 'tell'. as for the child's reply... from the mouths of babes, indeed.

LOL! I raised not only two, but operated an state-certified, in-home childcare center for 6 years, butters! If it's one thing I learned, it was how to communicate with themI certainly raised enough of them! Plus it allowed me to stay home with my children!
Thank you, my friend. Much appreciated.

You really broke it down to the basics.
I get frustrated watching congressional hearings because politicians can't answer a simple question.
"Is this banana yellow?" and the person on the stand will not say yes or no but dance around the question.
Great now I want bananas.

Yeah! I tried to, anyway!
I am right with you on the congressional hearings, my friend! Nor can they balance a budget! ADULTS!

Lolol, I have a belief, don't ask the apple guy about oranges and vice versa. But I never met the banana guy and his truck was so top-heavy it tipped over and caused a bad accident (true story). If a fruit basket makes a great holiday gift, than I guess a fruitcake is too presumptuous (its also too sumptious)..
If wars boil down to fruit varieties than I guess things are not as complicated as they seem, I.e. why can't everyone just get along 🍏🍊

Dear A,
Absolutely darling with a very potent message! This calls to mind a book I read years ago called ‘The Butter Battle Book’ by Dr. Seuss. An anti war theme showing how easily something can escalate into a war and to what end? Excellent A, positively excellent! H🌷

Yes! I loved that book, Honoria! Thank you for mentioning it. I think 99.9% of war could be avoided through education and understanding what each side fears. But, that's just too simple, isn't it? LOL!
Thank you, H. 🌷

Wow with great simile you compared war to a food fight sort of and variety of fruits to people. Kudos for an awesome poem that all could take heed and work for peace.

I like the juxtaposition of the heaviness and seriousness of "war" with the lightness of fruit and biscuits. Serious though it is, this brings a welcome bit of levity to a subject that is all to weary and wearing. Makes the subject accessible and understandable, without being depressing,

It's almost deceptive in its simplicity, but the part that stands above the rest is 'Tell me what you think'. That line deviates from the typical parental script of using an analogy to describe an abstract concept to a child. To encourage a child to think for themselves is one of the highest forms of love a parent can give. Thank you for this beautiful peice.

It really is so simple, and yet adults just don't get it. My father would always answer my questions with a question to turn me toward myself for my own answers. It was the greatest teaching method any parent could instill in a child, and one I definitely passed to my own children.
