I know absolutely nothing about baseball,
and I thought Hamilton was the bloke
whose wife was a particular friend of
lord Nelson, but I'm pretty sure he would
have preferred cricket ..

Well, Mr. Hamilton had nothing to do with baseball (that we know of), but couldve been familiar with cricket, USA having been Brit colony for so long.
Alexander Hamilton & Aaron Burr were early politicians in NY at the end of the Revolution. Hamilton was a hero of the new government.....& Burr was your typical politician, not above being a shallow manipulator, & was personally very jealous of Geo. Washington's high regard for Hamilton since years before the Rev. Anyway, Burr was festering with resentments toward Hamilton, &, make a long story short, in 1804 things came to a head. They had to row across the Hudson with their "seconds" & a surgeon because, by that time, dueling was illegal in NY, & the other side of the river was the relative wild country of New Jersey. Hamilton was shot , died a few days later, was widely mourned & memorialized. Burr had always been seen a bit of a scoundrel. Lost all of his political support, & died years later in relative ignominity & poverty.
The first organized, scheduled, (semi) professional baseball game (1841) was held across the river because the promoters couldn't find a suitable patch of level ground to play on in Manhattan. Well, the affair set off a firestorm of baseball mania, by the end of the civil war (1865), cricket was dead in US, having been "bowled over" by baseball.
