Going Home

She said stay with me for a while after I drove her home
Just don’t leave me right away
Have a drink and rest your bones
But don’t just walk away and leave me all alone

I didn’t want to hurt her then but all I’d done was drive her home
I didn’t want to make her cry the way she cried
I just couldn’t lead her on with something I just couldn’t give
So I just said I had to go and gave her a quick goodbye

But it’s never easy to leave a woman crying
It’ll tear your heart to pieces bleeding on the ground
So when I heard her start to softly whimper
I had to turn myself around

I held her hand while she wept
I felt so bad to see her so
She rested her head on my chest and cried out loud
It made me feel so goddamn low

She told me that she needed what a man could give
But when she looked into my eyes she knew
That I wouldn’t be that man that night
I couldn’t stay and love her and still hold my head up high
I couldn’t break the promise that I had given you

So I left her in that house as evening fell
I left her there just crying all alone
I wasn’t happy to have to hurt her
But I knew that I just needed to get back home

She said stay with me awhile don’t leave me here alone
Come on in and have a drink and rest your bones
