Dia de los Muertos
.
For those that I loved, and shall evermore,
I seek as I walk down the rows of graves
And pass people cleaning, decorating
Where all the dead will be rising tonight.
Children in painted skull face clap and sing:
"Despertar, queridos seres queridos
Awaken, dear ones,"
"Ven y únete a nosotros, a tu familia
Come and join us, your family,"
"Que viven en sus corazones.
Living in their hearts."
Though the celebration is bittersweet,
On Dia de los Muertos we party
To welcome the dead with laughter & joy,
Not to offend with grieving & sadness.
We eat tiny sweets of bright sugar skulls
And leave candy, food & drink at the sites,
As people hire mariachi bands
To entertain our cemetery guests.
Adult graves are marked with orange marigolds,
While white orchids are left where children lay.
So all through the night bathed in candle lights,
Fields of white orchids & orange marigolds.
This won first place in the DUP competition "Day of the Dead".

Ahh yes, the day of the dead. I've often wanted to travel to Mexico during the celebration of the day, the concept seems interesting, a day dedicated to celebrating the lives of loved ones.
This truly deserved first prize, congratulations on the victory!:)

Why thank you, Anon, and yes I think you'd be fascinated to observe this tradition at one of the cemeteries on November 1st (All Saints Day) & November 2nd (All Souls Day) when it's being observed. As for the win, it's about a bittersweet subject that had me grateful to place, but nothing actually victorious. I'm sure you understand because of my explanation. Still, I appreciate your support, dear.

Jade, muy bien escrito! I am touched by the reverence, love and joy that permeates this piece. I have fond memories of being invited to a village cemetery, by friends, to experience Dia de los Muertos while I lived in Spain. It really does bring to life the dead. Bravisima sabia poeta!

Aahh thank you so much, Bob, for the recommend, and how wonderful is your reception & express, and oooo, you've lived in Spain! I'd love to visit Barcelona, and the area connected to France east of Barcelona. And to eat fresh catch from the sea each day, to sip local wines with local cheeses and fruit... yessss, fresh fruit!
Oh my, now you've made me hungry!

More of a celebration than a lamentation, seems to me. It might be better to raise a toast than shed a tear for some proper closure. Your "Dia" catches the spirit beautifully, Jade. I've got my skull mask on.

This is beautiful. I absolutely love it. My family and I do the day of the dead alter in our household although we are not of Mexican, South American decent.

You're most generous, lovely es, for your recommend and wonderful express! And say, there are countries 'round the globe that observe their versions of such a tradition. You are familiar with Grace, one of our DU moderators (guardians)? She recently published a poem about her cultural tradition of this practice where she lives, yes! So you and your family are definitely covered.👍

A intriguing read and such a beautiful celebration. Orange marigolds and white orchids illuminated in soft candlelight, such a feast for the senses.
