she can be extraordinary or plain
she’s elusive, yet alluring. but most men are
afraid of a woman’s beauty, the austerity of it
a temptress lexicon infuses her poems
and if she’s deceptive, it’s her way of keeping secrets
the secret of her heart. the secret of her name
how demure is a maiden who bares her soul in
pristine verses, and bares the realms of her flesh
to a perverted gallery of shadows?
she can be carnal & dirty, but only with a man
who will match her fire, and reduce her
to cascading embers in the afterburn
she writes I love you on the wind
as if it will blow me into her arms
into her bed
speak your poems to enchant my brooding heart
but speak not those bespelling words…
and her heart cannot stand to take
the beating

time after time
and neither of them
can see past the dappling
almond, nectarine, and orange trees that line
the perimeter of her property
