Charity
rotten cabbages for cologne
eyes rimmed with yellow cruds
thin bony frame shiver with hunger
skeletal fingers clutching a blanket close
trembling hands
lifted to receive a sandwich
he swallowed almost half
I cringed, ashamed of me
was it charity that spurred the giving
for charity comes not from gifts
but thoughts behind the giving hands
and love seeing beyond the gangrenous being

rotten cabbages for cologne
eyes rimmed with yellow cruds

skeletal fingers clutching a blanket close
trembling hands
lifted to receive a sandwich

I cringed, ashamed of me
was it charity that spurred the giving
for charity comes not from gifts
but thoughts behind the giving hands
and love seeing beyond the gangrenous being

The last day's in May
He swapped the car in Phoenix
with a screwdriver and a twist of spark,
used a wad of money
like a maxi-pad over a deep red bullet wound
that oozed pink saline every time he moved.
She was probably with someone else.
He had no right to be heading her way,
asking for her charity after what he'd done.
The cool desert air made him feel drowsy
as the Buick's soft ride drifted from the road.
He could smell the creosote after rain,
a scent of home, a forgotten hiding place.
He picked all his words through the open window
and prepared to eat them like poison apples,
knowing he’d lost too much blood to explain.
The dust cloud settled outside her trailer,
the long stretching sound of the car horn
nudges her from a troubled sleep.
Maybe she'll be a forgiving nurse
with alcohol and tweezers,
give him clean sheets and chicken soup.
Maybe she'll tell him to get lost
and regret watching the tail lights
the moment they shrink out of sight.
Maybe she will get in the car to hold his hand,
stay there to watch the night give way
under the pressure of a fresh morning
and say "goodbye"
as she lifts the bag from the back seat.

In fun they fantasize..

Give Life
Give life, it’s a precious thing,
It’s a gift, a present, a good deed,
Give a little bit of yourself,
Give to those who are in need.
Years ago, when I almost lost my muse,
Her life was saved by a blood transfusion,
It was an act of kindness from a stranger,
A kind gesture and a valuable contribution.
I learned the importance of compassion,
Donating blood is a precious gift of life,
I realize what it means to pay it forward,
I appreciate it even more for having my wife.
Every sixty days I go into my local bank,
And give four hundred eighty milligrams,
It’s a small price compared to what it can do,
It makes a difference when it’s in such a demand.
But the feeling one receives after giving,
(Granted you’ve drank liquids and eaten right),
Is one of the most modest and noble emotions,
That you’ve given some else a chance to fight.
So donate just for the sake of giving, for living,
Human kindness is best attribute you’ll build,
The life you save might be for someone close,
Give blood, give life and you’ll be glad you did.

In my wallet warm and secure
a bond with others to embrace
no badge to wear, no grinning face
faith, your hearts in the right place
Throw your cape 'or a puddle
know the pain of toil and struggle
cast your hat into the ring
and help the others suffering
Give of yourself while you still live
for blood and tissue to a relative
and humanity be the sacred book
the cross to bear while others LOOK
Depreciate your time sublime
for god will mark your card in time
as they nailed him to the wood
gave his soul for the greater good
As we were cast in his perfect image
death be the start and not the finish
self sacrifice, I will not grimace
the card its offering , best of meagre limits.
For I heard, a higher callings need
I proffer at my self discretion
gift to keep, an ace hidden up your sleeve
no need to quote the bibles lesson.
