Poetry Contest

The Classic Corner: Kim Addonizio Tribute

Co-Hosts - Ahavati & JohnnyBlaze

Part XIII in an ongoing series introducing serious writers of DUP to the most well-known poets, both classical and modern.

Kim Addonizio ( born Kim Addie, July 31, 1954 ) is an American poet and novelist.

Kim Addonizio is the author of poetry collections, novels, story collections, and two books on writing poetry, The Poet’s Companion with Dorianne Laux and Ordinary Genius. She has received fellowships from the NEA and Guggenheim Foundation, two Pushcart Prizes, and was a National Book Award Finalist for her collection Tell Me.

Her latest books are Mortal Trash: Poems and a memoir, Bukowski in a Sundress. She recently collaborated on a chapbook, The Night Could Go in Either Direction with poet Brittany Perham. Addonizio also has two word/music CDs: Swearing, Smoking, Drinking, & Kissing with Susan Browne and My Black Angel.

Kim's personal website, where you may receive additional inspiration, is:

Guidelines

Write a new poem honoring Addonizio inspired by any one or more of her poems.  We feel listing particular poems may be constricting, and want you to follow the inspiration wherever it leads.

Do your best to make us feel as though we are reading poems by Addonizio. The more we feel you "capturing her essence" in "your own words" , the higher you will score.  This will involve choice of wording, delivery, subject material, formatting, target audience - a wide range of factors.

The Rules

1.  One entry per DUP persona.

2. No erotica; this is open to all ages and can't be viewed with an ECW ( Extreme Content Warning ).

3. No exact word limit; however, attempt to keep it no more than 250 - 300.

4. Any form is acceptable ( but studying the poet is advised ).

5. Hashtag your poem #KimAddonizio and link to your poem here. Do NOT copy paste your poem to the competition. The point is to eventually direct visitors searching for Addonizio to your poem via the hashtag we hope will eventually be implemented by the Webmiss.

6. In your poem's notes, provide a link to the poem(s) by Addonizio that inspired yours.
Comp will be judged by Ahavati & JohnnyBlaze, though they will be factoring in my input on each entry as well - while I may be participating with an viable entry of my own. You have one month; best of luck to all entrants.

Eating Together/Sandcastles [after Kim Addonizio]

At 14, for the first time
my mother suggested a movie night-
  'Sandcastles', starring
   Jan Michael Vincent.

It was a strange experience,
  eating in the living room
  versus dining table;
still, space lingered between us.

Being uncomfortable
is a bad amplifier:
  low, so you cut it up,
  loud, so you cut it down;

regardless how hard you adjust
frequencies just won't balance.

My mother's tears pooled,
  inched down her silhouette
  into the plate on her lap -

I blamed the romance scenes
  and awkwardly blushed.

We were in separate towers
as silence masticated minutes
too unusual to understand.

I re-watched it years later
long after my mother's castle collapsed
under a tide of death;
( something she had known
was coming for her at the time. )

I never understood why;
it wasn't a pleasant memory
  yet something compelled me
  to watch anyway.

Somehow, in that flickering
moment of vintage film-
I realized it hadn't been the romance;

but, failure she experienced
  not knowing how to relax
  or enjoy her own child;
words between us praying
to escape their respective towers
  while they had a chance:

something we both felt
too helpless to talk about-
  so ate in silence instead
  years after 'The End '.

~

A New Waste

There’s nothing and everything traditional
about myself. And even though you bring me
rare and exotic offerings to this table of myself,
of a retentive spirit with suspicions, I sniff
at your lack of knowledge of such cuisine.
I turn to race to the high country for fresh air
and a barn-sour mode of transportation
before my city insides knot. Yet in my flight
I feel the pull as my primitive hunger gets the
better of my expired wanderlust despite your
patrician ignorance. This naked nature’s girl
sick with drink in the wilderness. You know
the lay of the land I was born to, anticipating
it with wandering fingers undoing me, and
a moist mouth to a parched clime yielding.
Clearing all that came before, to lay a new
waste, sending invitations. The mortician.

My Red Dress

Nothing does impress
Like a bright red dress
So, I chose scarlet threads
To impress the Lords
And shock the Emperess
Some will think I'm
An attractive exhibitionist
But my kin, Elizabeth
Will think I've lost my head

Note; the above poem is not to be considered for the competition. My reward, will be the joy of participation. Good luck to all that participate.

New Years Day (The Dry Fountain)

Numbed by rain I
almost know how it feels

to not be broken or
remember falling

in youthful tumbles
skinning knees, tearing ‘hose

trying to jump across rocks
too widely spaced but

The Fountain was dry so
I had to try, now

I don’t know why, don’t care
to remember those things.

The ones I loved are still
on the North Shore somewhere,

they look out windows and
think of me perhaps at night,

of the girls we were,
the women we became.

I only hear the sound of
the rain slopping in mud

and it cools everything;
the burn of a skinned memory.

A fading love from yesterday
fills a footprint with a puddle

Its a blessing to erase it
and cover my face in rain.

             .....

First Poem For You (Kim Addonizio Tribute)

During the night and morning I love to touch your skin when the thick darkness
Swallows us both whole so there is nothing but blackness or barren starkness
Swirling around us like an emotional tornado, making it extremely problematic
To see anything at all, but I know you like the back of my hand and like the static
Noise of a television that does not get turned off. I know your chest hair that I run
My slender fingers through night after night, spent after making love until the sun
And it’s rays come up to meet the horizon like the frolicking ocean waves greeting
The shoreline. I love to kiss or trace the dark contours of your sweaty skin, heating
Up with every kiss or touch. Could all of this be as permanent as a tattoo? Because
I know when we really wake up and watch it being all over, something might cause
A shift, change or something that makes us question love. Thoughts of something so
Thrilling yet terrifying keeps me up as I am trying to understand, unravel and grow.
