Winter Poems
#winter
Winter poems about the coldest season of the year, December to February in the northern hemisphere and June to August in the southern hemisphere. Winter brings short dark days and stillness, as nature sleeps. Here you'll find poems about the beauty of the winter months, and also poems about dealing with cold and challenging weather.
Frozen
Icy tendrils
Paint a lacy snowflake pattern
On the window
Snowy gray beyond
Sucks the warmth from memories
Of recent summer
The walls themselves
Seem to bleed winter cold,
Chilling the air within
Sunny blue skies
Are vacationing in some tropical paradise
On an unapproved hiatus
Nothing stirs
On this February morn, man or beast
Life - time itself - in frozen hibernation.

February
For me it always so
both the longest
as well as the shortest
winter month
With peeking groundhogs
damp firewood logs
that seem to refuse
to ever light
To warm each lonely night
spent with a table for one
when all is said and done
dreading the fourteenth
With all of its flowers
cards
candy
each damsel with her dandy
Leaving me lying
to myself
in full repose
still trying to compose
both the longest
as well as the shortest
winter month
With peeking groundhogs
damp firewood logs
that seem to refuse
to ever light
To warm each lonely night
spent with a table for one
when all is said and done
dreading the fourteenth
With all of its flowers

Sunrise
On a snowy night 🌙
My mind is thinking about you, Sunrise.
It's been a while since I've seen you.
As I go to bed now,
I have set my alarm to 7:15 am,
So that I can wake up as you rise,
So that I can go outside to see you,
So that I can feel your warmth again!
Oh, Sunrise 🌅

Dead Leaves
Is there anything more lonely
than dead leaves
blown by a cold January wind
through a grove of barren trees,
piling up at the base
of mossy, faded tombstones
in an old unkempt cemetery –
forgotten in the mists of time
and lost history?

Vigil
So what is really the goal
in this season of the soul
what is there to do
to truly accomplish
Dressed in wool sweaters
released from the fetters
of the mere busywork
that tries to impersonate life
Curled up upon in my chair
while evading each despair
evading the deep sense
that the clock is running slow
While the heavy brass chimes
keep to their own times
forever disconnected
from my own true calendar
As I count down each day
trying somehow to pray
for any form of forgiveness ...

Winter Work
When the morning is spread with silver sheen
Everything covered with the sparkle white
Of frost's thin coat
Trees stand naked and bare
In the shaming winter's cold, cold air
The tiny yard birds come around
Scurrying, searching for seeds
And just inside the wood line
Movement ever so slight,
To barely form the shadowy shape of a deer
Stiff necked. ears erect, eyes wide open
And head on a swivel
Then a calculated step and hold
To look and listen and be still
After a quiet moment, another single step ...

truth in an uncommon coldness.
wrapped in my pseudo cold weathered best
braced for an uncommon version of chill
true coldness claws and sneers it's snark jest
frozen to bone—
sHiVeRinG
confined to an icy heart's shrill
eyes pried
to open so wide
pure.
vivid.
clear.
crystallized in sheer force
yet, with a tender-like care
s l o w l y....
beasts of burden gentle their snarling howls
the wind crawls to abscond
and all the while,
...spiked frost adorns
her cold
in exquisite glacial forlorn...

Snapshot
First snowfall 2021
Window panes of glass
bend evening's light
transforming an espresso landscape
into snowflaked obsidian—
a phenocryst crystal, reflecting
a solitary soloist perched
on a shivering pin oak's limb
No bigger than my palm
its shrill organ penetrates
a Universe of soft silence
despite the absence
of light or warmth
'And I think to myself,
What a Wonderful World'

Frosted
I love it so
when the moon
illuminates
the carpet of frost
The crystalline layer
across the frozen field
now fully revealed
for my lonely eyes
To hear the crunch
underfoot
as I slowly walk
all alone
As if to now atone
for the sin of pride
leaving nature denied
in all my haste
Only now to return
perhaps to learn
what it is
She has to say
when the moon
illuminates
the carpet of frost

The following day.
When pain leads
to the Benediction.
Green grass and roses
For the night of December
Of the lights and Chandelier
To swim across the country street
Now the herald Sun of night's
Blue bells.

The Year's Adieu
Just as the year is ending
(As winter snows the leaves)
The autumn glow pretending ~
The winter chill deceives.
As squirrels start defending
Their caches underground,
December's shiver pending,
And swallows southward bound.
The cool of day is blending
(As it frosts the forest floor)
Into the sunset tending
To be sooner than before.
The boughs of treetops bending
As gales race through their form
Spiralling and wending
Propelled by winter's storm.
And so, the nightfall sending
