Black Wall Street
Tulsa 1921
As I stare at the dangling sign
It reads Williams Dreamland Theater
Hanging on by a thread it’s about all that’s left
Dawn rises in Tulsa 1921 smoke and debris is all that’s stands
Downtown shoe shine boy gets accused of
Being lewd with a White Lady
Newspaper prints the story and a white crowd grows for hours
Black men assemble put on war uniforms
March down to the courthouse to save a Black man from lynching
Police say there is nothing to fear go home and chill out

nice people around and rather
similarly too there are simply
exceptionally and outstandingly remarkable
ones whose usual normal interactions with
others is so obviously literally phenomenal
that it's specifically hard to very essentially
and effectively, crucially codify into words,
what this impression really is; except truly
to honestly and honourably communicate
that the fundamental effect it quite simply
has on the observer's physche is...

Estrella is a Star
She's the first one on the dance floor.
The only one.
Fine.
More room for her to shine.
Estrella doesn't test the water of the thudding beat.
She stomps right into it.
Owning the ocean.
Letting no wave stop her
Swimming so strong she could reach a distant shore.
Her confidence a beacon,
others are lured to the dance space.
They giggle.
Look to each other for what to do.
It will take them years -if ever- to figure out
What Estrella was born knowing.
I hope Estrella always remembers ...
The only one.

I find myself longing for change
Yesterday is a closing door
I seek the highest mountain range
Where my heart is free to soar
Somewhere out there, where dreams come true
A thousand miles seems pretty far
I am capable now, now that I found you
To wish upon a great bright star
