Brother Poems
#brother
Poems about brothers, the love and closeness between siblings. Brother poems explore the good and bad side of family relationships with brothers.
two brothers
(opposition disposition)
“Together, [they] form a necessary paradox;
not a senseless contradiction.”―Criss Jami, Healology
one is a priest,
the other is a pest;
him, too, a beast.
his sibling does his best,
sending the light,
where brother casts a plight;
the one engaged,
the other man enraged.
one is a friend,
the other full of ire;
him, too, a fiend,
his sib the world’s desire.
one shifts the blame,
his brother takes the hurt;
one mends the lame,
the other rends the heart.

The 46
Siblings on the bus, a lively scene
With laughter, chatter and joyful beam.
Together as travel, side by side,
Miles apart, yet heart to heart tied.
As we look out through the window,
The world passes us by like a show,
The bustling streets, the people and cars.
Melodies of life float in like stars.
With laughter, chatter and joyful beam.
Together as travel, side by side,
Miles apart, yet heart to heart tied.
As we look out through the window,
The world passes us by like a show,
The bustling streets, the people and cars.

Brother
A figure standing next to me
A man of 6,6 tall
A quiet soul of whom I love
To him, I owe it all
He watched me grow
From none to now
And never let me fall
The odd one out
In a sea of liars
We grew up, hand in hand
And I’ll never forget
His genuine smile
On a pedestal, he stands.
To him, I thank
For who I am
And all that I could be
Because what is life
Without a soul
As loving, or as free,
As he.

Brother
I ate
Chicken heart,
While sitting
By my brother-in-law,
At a street vendor stall,
Half a world away;
We talk
As brothers,
Separated by
A mere barrier
Of common speech;
He knows much
Of my native tongue;
I know scant bits
Of his;
This worthy man
Is
My brother.

Sister & Me
Sister & Me
Crimson tressed child
Of the copper lamplight
trades first communion lily gown
For blue nurse evening shawl
With Red Cross and
Toy stethoscope
To hear the Jazz rhythm
Of my heart
But phonograph of Brubeck
Plays our song
For our pretend Union
On altar of girlhood tears
That bears the loneliness
I too feel
While lost in boyhood dreams
Of seagulls chasing the night away
On neighborhood stoops
Where Django strums from guitars
As dawn comes with slow insistence ...

the loss of the known
The loss of the known
A sudden flash occurred, a moment of a forgotten past
walking down a wide road that only had a few cars trundling along
to the left where the road wears to the right, a café I thought of going
in for a beer, but the dog if left outside, would fret
A fine day, not hot or cold, must have been early spring or fall
tried to remember what I was doing before the curtain was drawn
I was left with an unfinished memory, one I had to make it up
to fill in the blanks.
Something sad about the scene of a sole...

my auntie
My Auntie
When he entered his aunt’s basement flat
I had been in the yard when she called me in
she squatted over a bucket of water, cleaning her fanny
I handed her a towel and a bottle of spray cologne
My aunt was not like other aunts took no interest
In knitting woolly socks for African children
She was a free spirit and loved men, but she preferred
Teutonic men and disliked the Latin types, except once
When we children brought home a black cook from
A banana ship; he spent two nights in her bed but looked
pale when the captain...

the mouse
The mouse
My wife was opening the door to the verandah
when she spotted a mouse and fled to the kitchen
and shouted, “Kill it, kill it!”
I picked up the small animal hiding under a dry leaf
that had yet to be blown away, careful not to be bitten
soon the mouse relaxed in the palm of my hand.
I marvelled about this tiny thing; how did it get on
the seventh floor must have been climbing up at night
got lost or tired and rested on our terrace
There was no way I was going to kill it if there had
been hundreds of them on the terrace, I...

Grandpa Blues for Grandma & Me
Grandpa Blues for Grandma & Me
Deserted gas station
In pitch black cloak
Of an African American gentleman
Ambling down the street
Our guardian seraph
On this blue avenue
Where parishioners of the church congregate
And a New Jerusalem waits
The man ushers us down the aisle
What is your name I ask?
“Richard, too many people know me
Where I died in Paris
But here hardly anyone knows me.
I prefer the anonymity of my hometown.”
And the memory of a lonely sign
By the bluffs that honors the Native Son ...

He's Not Like This All the Time
I love you.
You're an asphyxiant
Because, your heart, what's left is crumbs.
Imaging a picture perfect person.
Your eyes, the windows to the soul,
Through my lens, pre-post
All I see is red
You're an asphyxiant
Because, your heart, what's left is crumbs.
Imaging a picture perfect person.
Your eyes, the windows to the soul,
Through my lens, pre-post
All I see is red

solo, so low
you want to test me
I get it
I get it
I get it
how fucking long?
I know what's at stake
I stake my lack of reputation on that
it hurts really
I'm out there I see some of you are too
attack me, come out and do it
but I ask why we are kicking each other's asses
divide and conquer
that's what he would do, you know me
I am uniting
you underestimate the disturbed ones
you think I couldn't I connected to them
purified and pushed through
I am...

hey, hey dude can we talk openly
I know people get pissed at me because I always favored you
it's not right maybe, but I'm not an actor
I have to be myself
when will I see you again?
brotherhood, sisterhood, cousins, Time Infinite
you still got room on the block for me?
I miss you, man
I can't lie
I try
it hurts me
you want to beat me down brotherfucker?
I am here in lockup
I never talked
interrogation
yeah deja vu
I'm spinning in the energy
our kids are fine
man, I...
