Sometimes

Sometimes I miss the youth I never had
Chances that slipped through my fingers
Warmth from those born to protect me
Love that was supposed to comfort me

Neglect is the abuse
That leaves bruises and scars you can’t see
The bond meant to cocoon, nonexistent

Clothing, food and shelter alone
Cannot sustain a heart
Cannot fill an invisible cup

My life void of hope, goals, and dreams
I couldn’t understand the concept of anything beyond myself
Protection, support, encouragement, love
Just words in a dictionary
I wouldn’t learn the meaning until I learned to give them to myself

It took over half a century

Sometimes I miss the dreams I had last night
The gloriousness of yesterday
The warmth of your arms
The sound of your voice when you say goodnight

Sometimes doesn’t destroy me anymore
Sometimes is temporary
I know tomorrow there will be more
Much, much more of everything I deserve
Love
