Bittered Sweet
As friends go, we were quiet lovers
just a once
Absolute darkness forced our fingers
to search for help;
Found our bodies.
Your hands were so cold
that I knew they were practicing
being blue, soon.
So black, though, in the room
You didn't see my eyes teared up
from the freezing
When I put your fingers
to my lips, and blew
all the warmth
that my chest could offer you.
I couldn't see you
not smiling
Knowing this wasn't enough
to thaw forty years
of wintered life.
Groped for my lighter
lit the way for you
to manage the path
to the bathroom.
Shock of light;
Your silhouette staining
the picturesque basics
of the doorway.
As if in death;
The reverse of life.
Such is darkness
swallowing light.

Before you go, give me
one of your earrings
I will stab it through my lobe.
A bit of pain, a drop of blood
is enough to remember you.
And then go, be a ghost
but not towards me
because I tried.
I stalled you most I could
asked you to explain more
than you were able to.
So we sat, after, upright
watched the moon
do nothing to help the situation.
It's seen it all before
Now it's only pale
Color bled out, over the ages
from shock and dismal endings
of human beings.
All you're doing
is proving it right
I can't convince you
to do otherwise.
Before you go
share a drink with me.
I will pry an old smile
from you
and then fold it
down the middle
like a pocket knife
to stuff in my pocket.
I will tuck it away
in a wooden box
and someday I will refind it
amongst the wheat pennies
and halved concert tickets.
I will hold it to my face
and I will smile
bittersweet.
But a smile is not a smile
when covering sadness.
It's a bandage.
~
I meant to tell you;
Before you jump
remove your shoes
Leave them on the bridge.
Perhaps someone just crossing
will come along
Will add some miles on them
when they remove their silhouette
from your last known
existence.
The sound of your shoes on their feet;
That same sound, as they're leaving me
Twice now, but who keeps count
of memories.
