Back Up Plan Friendship
I'm wondering where I'm at right now
On the raggedy back up plan list of yours
Am I the first you reach out to when this happens?
The second? Third? Which number am I?
It's always the same story of failed times spent with others
Why do you do you even do that? To point it out
You really needn't go so far out of your way
To make it known spending time with me is second
I wonder if you stare at your phone when they cancel
And ponder who to message to replace them
You make such a fuss that we don't hang out
There's a certain level of disrespect to be so blatantly told
That this wasn't how you wanted to spend your time
But why would I want to jump at the last second for you?
When I'll always just be... the back up plan

People don't even need to make it known it's even a backup plan. I don't see the point in that.

I've been there. I still have friends like that long distance that I don't hear from unless there's some unhappiness to share, I just try to be kind and figure there's something valuable in being that person. People can be really oblivious, I know I can be. I was feeling good lately til a recent injury.

Hey there lady.....Your pen never fails to be of bold and honest excellence. I feel this piece from both sides, methinks. I can wholly relate to the harsh realities and varied dynamics of friendships as we age; how sometimes they can change and become a different animal all together. There were (sadly) many times throughout the years I know that life sometimes interfered with my ability to decently balance those types of relationships and looking back I am ashamed to admit that I now realize I could have done much better than I did at treating people better. However, It took time and maturity for me to realize and fess up to my mistakes in that area of my life. It's not an easy thing to admit to one's self or publicly and I'm beyond grateful and filled with forever thanks that my good friends allowed me the opportunity to explain and to prove myself... worthy again. I've learned that life and most people are more complicated than they might let on. I just needed time and a much better empathic understanding of that before I came to the point of action and self awareness.... Anyway, to say, this resonates.... puts it mildly.
I hope you know you're no one's back up plan.... You're a gem for being there when someone needs you.

Thank you for sharing that part of your story with me. I think being a friend whether it is good or bad takes skill. Sometimes it just takes awhile to figure it out. Being able to be open and honest with others is a genuine form of vulnerability that is terrifying. Friendship is rarely shown how truly hard it can be to maintain and grow. It's one of those relationships that don't get a lot of light on. We've countless information and instructions on romantic ones but friendship? Seems to be an unexplored sea sometimes.... It let's us know where their priorities lie and how important we are to them. It sucks to say it but reciprocation is not always what we thought it might be, that one party tries harder than the other, only in those times of need.
It's a strong write, a harsh realization that as the years pass, some friendships are tested and they simply sink the river, barely hanging on.

It's been a strange part of growing up when decade old friendships fade away like this. I just want them to be happy. I just won't be treated like an old hat you use while the other is being washed.
