Poinsettia Red Lipstick
As the festive wind howls its cheer
For the upcoming Christmas Year
I always light a candlestick
To a time of Poinsettia Red Lipstick
When my Abuela would sit and sew me
Dresses on her singer sewing machine
With smoke threading the holiday air
By a single abandoned cigarette
Stub wedged into the slot
Of her black acrylic ashtray
Decorated with red halo rings
Of mini Poinsettia wreaths
My home now adorned with
Embracing hugging presents
Each vibrant plant display
Her essence and presence
Afterwards when feeling pangs
Of loss and wistfulness
I’ll remember her spirit
Blended in nostalgia &

Author's Note
My grandmother loved Poinsettias and red lipstick.
I thought I'd blend them together and write something in
honor of her. She was a smoker too. hahaha
Her name was Delphina - I'm named after her:)
No music - just my Nana talking to me in her broken up
English. LOL

Wonderfully woven, Del. I'm happy for you, to have that kind of ideal memories.
It helped create the woman you are now. So obviously she passed her best traits to you. You make her proud.

Hey Styx:)
Yes - she was awesome. She couldn't read or write but
she could sew anything without a pattern.
All she would need to do is look at a magazine or picture
and she could make it:)
She also made the best homemade tortillas!!! OMG!!
To die for buddy.
Thanks for the RL and commenting.

A great tribute at the perfect time of year to your abuela. it's all of those little things, those little moments that stick. Children tend to see and remember every freaking detail, Tight

Hey Meme
She loved the color red and flowers.
It was her thing. She mostly wore red lipstick for special
occasions. Not an everyday thing. LOL
Glad you enjoyed!!

Dear A,
Beautiful homage to your beautiful grandmother. This is such a lovely write. Brings back wonderful memories of my own grandmother, who also smoked and could sew like a mad hatter.
Thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful write. H🌷

Hi H:)
It's that time of year and I wanted to celebrate
her in some way. I bought 4 poinsettia plants last weekend
and got inspired. I wish I could sew!!
But I can sew a button on. LOL
She's rolling her eyes at that comment. hahaha
So happy to have reminded you of your grandmother:)

This also brings back memories of my gram. Bright read hair, singing at a piano bar with a long cigarette and telling every restaurant we went to that it was my birthday so they would bring me balloons.
Love this write:)

Hi Her!
OMG! I love that she would make sure to get you balloons.
They always bring joy regardless of age (to me anyway). lol
And she would sing at a piano bar with a long cigarette - that's
such a awesome visual to me:)
So glad you included that memory in this comment:)

Oh your rhyming is too good damnit! Love it!
I am terrible at rhyming, lol... too impatient with that I guess. lol
The imagery is always amazing... I love the wind howling...
Just how Winter is supposed to be... with candlelight too.
Honoring your grandmother and the things she loved.
Making you dresses is so awesome. I love the thought of that and family.
I never really had much family around me so I love reading about things like that.
Black acrylic and red halo rings... makes me think of a succubus. :p
Okay I know that's way off base but it is what it is where my mind went. lol
She sounds wonderful, I love these memories. I can feel her presence from your words.
A bit of sadness at the end but so much comfort and happiness in this too.
Your titles are always so impactful. Really lovely Adel, like you. :)
Sorry I have been so absent as of late. When we get back up, life has a way
of kicking us again sometimes. Anyway, I missed your writing (and so many others too).

Hi Kristina:)
Thank you for such a lovely comment. I know you have
your plate full so for you to take the time to stop by
means the world chica:)
She was a handful! LOL
The only person who could put my mom in her place.
My mom is a boss - no joke.
But not with my Abuela - nope - hahahaha
You'd have loved her. She would have made you
sit down and eat as soon as you walked through the door:)
You crack me up with the succubus - hahaha
She was a devote Catholic but not the stuffy kind.
Great sense of humor and loved her red lipstick!!
So many memories.
I'm glad you enjoyed and got a sense of her.
You don't ever have to apologize for anything with me:)
If you can stop by that's great -
If not I completely understand chica:)
Thanks for the RL!!

Hi PS
The generation she came from was harsh.
She couldn't read or write cause she didn't go to school.
Too busy taking care of all of her brothers and sisters.
She was one of the oldest - but took the lead in that area.
Learned early how to survive and picked up sewing.
She married my grandpa who served in WW2.
He was in the Army.
Rest is history:)
I always think of her around Christmas cause of all the
Poinsettias:)

Hey Cipher!!
Thank you so much.
My Abuela should have been a fashion designer!!
Great seamstress and sense of style too.
But also a handful when she got older.
You should have seen her in the nursing home arguing
with the other residents in the hallway. She would even
try to beat them down the hallway in her wheelchair.
There came a point that she needed 24 hour care and we couldn't
do it. Big adjustment for my mom = but she went everyday and had lunch with her to make sure she would eat and take her medicine.
Yes - she argued with the staff too. hahaha
Phew - feisty till the bitter end!!!
Her passing was peaceful - like she fell asleep:)
Her presence is always missed around the holidays.
Bought some poinsettias last week and got inspired.

Set it to bluesy music, you know you want to, with the rhythm of that Singer sewing machine! Who hasn't owned a manual singer sewing machine in their lifetime, right? My Mum had one once, lol. Did you ever keep any of the dresses your Grandma made for you? I love how you have brought this story back to life. After all, Christmas is always a time of reflection, where we think about our loved ones, past & present... Mind you, sweet sherry or other forms of alcohol might have something to do with it, lol! I'm teasing ya. It's a lovely write & nod to your Grandma, regardless of the time of the year! Just seems more poignant now, when everyone's dancing around. Oh no, I'm not stopping you from dancing around... I might even join ya. ;-)

Hey Billy Blue:)
Surprisingly enough - I actually wrote this to no music if you can believe that. I'll have to check out some nice bluesy music. I think she would have liked it. She was more of a mariachi band kind of person.
I think my mom still has a couple of my baby dresses she sewed for me after I was born. I don't have any from when I was older. I was young and didn't take care of them. Ughhh
But I have a few pictures with me wearing them.
One was an Easter mini dress that had Easter Eggs all over it instead of polka dots. LOL
Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a comment:)

I know, it's always the way. We wished we had hung on to everything sometimes but it never goes that way & it's the same with everyone really but you have those memories stored in your heart, that's the main thing & no one can take them away from you!

It's white with different kinds of birds on all the cups.
Always pack that extra special whenever we move.

No Abuelita - sounds too old. hahaha
She had her ways:)

Adelphina, I love this with a passion! I can see her smoking as well as sewing. You capture the magic with vivid and rich storytelling. You create a duet of poinsettia and red lipstick that enchants me. I can feel the nostalgia for those family Christmasses with her. My grandmother sewed too and we always had poinsettias adorning the living room. I appreciate your gift of this poem as it is a real Christmas gift to be read and treasured by me and others.

Hi John!!
So glad and happy to enchant you buddy. I love that flower especially around the holidays. It jazzes the house up. lol
And yes - her favorite lipstick color was red so I decided to try
and blend into something she would have enjoyed. She couldn't read but I would have gladly read it to her. I can see her smiling knowing she inspired this write. Actually, she would have smirked instead of smile. hahaha
