Author's Note
for Al's 'Self Not Me' comp
https://deepundergroundpoetry.com/forum/competitions/read/12196/
Writing a poem about yourself, inspired by this visual all while not being able to use the listed 'do not use' word list. Man, it was harder than I expected. I feel like I achieved something by just finishing ... lol.

Absolutely, I'm totally in on us both being proud regardless. I don't usually win comps anyway but like I said in my note, I feel super excited to have finished this one. It was harder than I thought it would be!! Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts.... it really makes me feel like I accomplished something. I hope you feel similar!
Much love and and appreciation, Me

Hey there, Al :)
You're very welcome!
I had been eyeing that pic for a few and couldn't stop myself! You were so very right, that this particular comp challenge was a bit harder than I expected it to be.
Nicely crafted, you!!
Thank you for sharing this opportunity with us.
Much appreciated and obliged, dear poet 🙏🏻

Wow, thanks so much for the high praise, Jay.
It means a lot to me that you felt like how you've so keenly described. It's wholly encouraging and deeply rewarding to be understood via what I write. I deeply appreciate you and your thoughtfulness, my friend. The restriction requirements for this comp were harder than I expected, it's true, so it was pretty rewarding to just finish with a open that made sense... haha...
Maybe after thinking about it, you might consider entering, the more the merrier, they always say!!
Thanks again for seeing me and reading me like you do. I'm truly lucky to have your eyes upon my work.
Much love and appreciation, my dear poet 🙏🏻

Youth does see such a short distance, invulnerable and all knowing in its short navigation. Then experience, tried and true, more brutal than honest, makes its juggernaut path through the veins of naivete and magical thinking, and rips the stability of dreams up by the roots....is it sadness or clarity, can we tell the difference?
Would anything make up for that loss other than that serenity of promise, fulfillment in retrospect, knowing history only in reverse, and even that only if used to illuminate the path for the fearless blind who follow? Now would a kiss fix it? Acknowledgement? Agreement? Knowing all along?
Nothing but memory. And that, only in warning....not to interfer with the inescapable. We all learn in our own way. The lesson is not to shame another's journey.

Re: Re. The art of translucency and how thin skin learns skilled illum
No, we can't always tell the difference, that's for sure... Only hindsight, perhaps mixed with our life experiences can give us a good idea at possibly telling between sadness and clarity. Although, if I'm honest, there's some days that I'm still unsure I can...
Learning is indeed personal and to each their own, I agree but there's some universal understanding/experience, that apply to us all, as well. A shared commonality in certain pain, hope, joy, love, etc... Where we all can feel deep resonance, finding similar pathways familiar and thus empathetic. Because we've been there before.
We know.
A bulk of us, do,anyway.
Youth sometimes can't see that particular forest for the trees. I envy that a tiny bit because it also means that their focus, (the young,) isn't yet filled with unhelpful distraction. Where selfishness is, in a way, practiced and rewarded .....
—Are just my thoughts.
You make my day, with replies that really open me up and give me a cool opportunity to stretch my 'mental legs'... It's truly a wonderful and pleasurable treat, RT.
Thanks for the brightening!

Hey B,
So - this is pretty intense! Love the imagery accompanied with so many gritty phrases.
A total unfiltered look at the reality desolation. Being alone and no support system like family.
I got a lost orphan feel with this. Just getting caught up in a broken system and letting go your dreams.
Great write amiga!!
Good luck in the comp:)

Hey there, A :)
I appreciate you taking the time to visit. Your summary of what you read was truly adept and keenly aware. You're very kind and insightful thoughts are deeply meaningful to me - 💙
There's a bit of youthful pain, a lot of bad choices and some consequences that one might feel after becoming aware of how innocence is a commodity that can be used up, lost or stolen away; when and where that awareness hits, can be beyond brutal. Desolation, yes.. even if family is there, the decision to brave it all ahead, going solo—weighs heavy, indeed....
Just some thoughts as I was writing.
All my deepest thanks and warmest regards, dear lady.

No need to feel left out or hard pressed to comment. It's all about how you, as the reader, are made to feel. Not about figuring out exact intent by the author. The abstract nature ebbs and flows in this one, that's true. I took the picture and decided to write about where I might have been mentally, at this girl's age of a pic of me was taken and a moment was caught like this. Putting myself, literally in her shoes.... and this is what poured out.
I am so grateful for your honest comments and kind visit. Never worry or apologize for your own feelings /understanding from anything that I write. I will normally leave an author's, clarifying, if I know that a piece is going to be sort of hard to understand or you can always ask me in comments and I'll elaborate. It's no biggie, at all.
However, no worries really, most of my poetry tends to be pretty cut and dry... Hahaha 😂
Thanks again, Tim
I sincerely appreciate you!

Still sounds like 'you' even without you, lol. I sence it will be a winner. Liking the cozy new avatar by the way, not that it has any relevance here.

Lol... Thanks for the avatar compliment... too kind, there.
As far as winner in the comp, that's very nice of you to say but I can tell you in all of honesty that I'm almost always not one. I lose way more often than not. It's ok, as I am fully aware of the incredibly talented pool of poets out there and like I said in my Author's note, I already feel a real sense of accomplishment just finishing a coherent piece at all ... Lol. This competition poem was harder to bring together than I imagined it would be.
I deeply appreciate you stopping by and for leaving me your thoughts....Much obliged! - 🌹
Best regards,

Oh I do like the scepticism in the poem, like 'steep steps falling away' & the lines about the concrete with tales cemented in stone, harder & hardening. I would be happy also with this offering. Definitely a top three poem at any rate, in my opinion.

Just fucking fuck, mate. Sorry to be expletive there but this piece of writing ...FUCK!...lol
Your words always carry emotion with every passing line.
'Memories weigh

Just annihilated me...just use up my expletive count for this post, so...FUCKING WOW.
