2020 in Hindsight
Normally I write a poem on New Year’s Eve
And ramble about what I did and didn’t do
But since the world has been in left reprieve
I’d say I have a slightly different kind of view
And in disbelief of how many were deceived
I lost a couple of acquaintances this last year
Because it felt like there wasn’t consistency
And though we don’t always have to agree
It really came to a question of human decency
In total disbelief of a whole new level of idiocy
I know we all have our opinions and ideas
But we can’t ignore the signs and warnings
Climate change and global warming are real
The endless hurricanes and fires storming
Is Mother Nature’s supplication and appeal
And then a plague was unleashed upon us
Sweeping across the planet without prejudice
Some went as far as to lie and called it a hoax
Like a crime against humanity, its treasonous
Now the disease is killing millions of folks
Then racism showed its ugly face on T.V.
Murdering people over and over again
The system is broken and so the world spoke
Standing up for rights for all to comprehend
But those in power hid behind the smoke
But the plague rages on without stopping
And yet many choose to ignore the rules
Causing more people to get sick and some die
So the plague continues because of fools
Who are either selfish or still believe the lie
The year certainly put a damper on plans
Loved ones are being taken away too soon
As we try to survive by keeping our distance
For some the loneliness feels like a blue moon
As we wait to enjoy the rest of our existence
In hindsight, 2020 has been a year
Of turmoil, cancel culture and protests
Unsure of how long all this anxiety will linger
As a goodbye I have formatted this verse
To give a fucked-up year the middle finger
