Final Prayer

I whimper softly when you come
Knowing this is our last
You say that I’ve betrayed our love
Then I feel the blast

Your piece of lead is taking my life
I stand now in despair
But as I fall toward the ground
I pause to say a prayer

If I could only go back again?
I’d live for more than self
Could I not redeem more time
For the sharing of my wealth?

This falling will be ending soon
I’ll not touch lightly down
But with the crush of bone and flesh
I’ll remain within earth’s bounds

Your bullet struck home, so now I end
Naked as I began
From the moment that I hit the ground
I’ll be turning into sand

All the loves and lust I’ve shared
Now float out into empty
I have regrets and could-have-beens
I’m dead now barely twenty
