Evelyn
My maternal grand-mother, Evelyn Woodward,
born 1888, lived through
the arrival of cars, radio & TV, manned flight
two world wars, loss of the family business
in the Liverpool blitz
the moon-landings and arrival of computers;
always treated by a homeopathic doctor,
but blind for the last 30 years of her life,
she looked after her younger spinster sisters
and died in 1984
with 96 years of astonishment on her face
that she was still alive.

Author's Note
She gave me my name, and a bible verse that has kept me going, Joshua 1:9, "Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest". (One of the rare occasions when the bible has been a good influence).

Love the positive nostalgia of this piece. To dedicate a poem to someone is a great honor.

Dear J,
What an amazing person your grandmother! A gorgeous homage that I’m sure has brought a smile to her face in heaven. I so enjoy these wee peeks into family lives. They show such a lovely connection to who we are and this poem is no exception. Beautiful write. H🌷

Thank you Honoria, and for the RL too. She was amazing and because she lived so long, (the other 3 grand-parents died when I was pretty young) I got to know here a bit - she was very inspiring.

A wonderful tribute, Josh. Everyone should be so lucky to be immortalized in a poem. I'm sure she's honored.

Thank you. No doubt she would have downplayed any 'honour', believing she was just tootling along doing what she the only thing she could.

This is a beautiful tribute, Josh. She sounds like a remarkable woman.
And that biblical verse has always been one of my favorites. The bible has a lot of truth in it; it just needs to be sifted as flour by the spirit to keep what will benefit our individual journeys, and leave behind what will not.

Thank you, she was indeed a remarkable inspiration - and never really got ill at all. Cateracts blinded her but otherwise she was completely on the ball well into her 90s.
I agree with you, the Bible can be a mixed bag fermenting all sorts of interpretations - but I reckon a genuine 'reading' converts into a genuine insight.

That's truth, Josh. I've read it cover-to-cover at least half a dozen times; taught it as well. Each reading reveals a deeper level.

Just beautiful, Josh. My maternal grannie was like yours...a very strong individual who raised me, thankfully, for the first five years of my life...wish they had've met each other.
Cheers...Harry

Thank you Harry, I'm sure our respective 'elders' would have got on fine. There is something about a genuine 'acceptance' of overwhelming events that made them have an air of peace no matter what.

Beautiful piece Josh. Family history and roots are something to be really proud of. Sounds like she was a great lady.
Respect.

Thank you. Yes, I wish now I knew more about my grand-parents. The older I get the more I respect older people who have a sense of contentment with life - what a place to arrive at :))
