Transient Vessels

Canadian geese float on
dark water at midnight
there's peace in the way
they move with each choppy wave.

I came to the lake to pray
but the stars are dull and
it's rather depressing to see
the sky mimic and mock my mood.

Insomnia sneaks up on a person
you never know when the brain
wants to go fishing in the past.
I think about my old boots
they were black, like the abyss
I gaze upon.

I can hear the wind beating the flags
chain against the pole and
it comforts me, a sort of music
that plays off key but it plays for me.

The light dances againt the water
inviting me in with its seductive
rhythm, I regretfully decline
though I romanticized the thought,
I'll leave tonight to the fishflys
and spend the rest of the night
wrestling with my pillow.
