Story Poem, Nr.24 — Dogged Grace
Aunt Mabel visited one day
and managed in her usual way
to skewer all the homely chat
by bringing her obnoxious cat,
a spoilt beast as one may guess
and here’s the story to confess:
The family time was Sunday lunch
a pleasantry, but here’s the crunch
for when it came to clear the table
watch the actions by Aunt Mabel
deftly as the scraps go round
with scrappy-scrapy type of sound
the plates on reaching table’s end …
she grabs them quickly to defend
the tasty morsels for her pet —
an act her hosts would not forget
for Wilf, their dog, lies by the fire,
he trusts routine for plain desire
and wakes to food by salivation
ambles in a concentration
makes his way to kitchen’s bowl
as is his normal happy role
to find Aunt Mabel’s precious cat
one step ahead to where it’s at -
with coiffured hair and polished teeth
the cat gulps down the scraps of beef
and Wilf now struck by broken trust
is left to lick the crumbs and dust
and with transgression of the law
like Oliver does ask for more …
the cat, high up on Mabel’s knee
conveys superiority
and purring with a fiendish grin
stroked by her mistress on the chin
in high and mighty disposition
sneers at Wilf’s now glum position
and rudely spits in poor Wilf’s face!
but Wilf, a dog of dogged grace
acceptingly counts one-to-ten
forgives the cat, and then again
returns to lie next to the heat
and sees his life as still complete —
he ponders by the crackling fire
“the situation isn’t dire
though stolen beef is not so great,
’tis well an’ good, I’m overweight”.

lol, what a fantastic story poem, so whimisical and pleasing to the ear.
I love old style poems like this, its so notalgic and a style that is not only forgotten but not as appreciated sadly because it takes great deal of talent to convey the story while making to flawlessly fluid, flowing from the tongue. Very well done here Josh.

Hi Layla, really glad you liked it - means a lot to me. I think I managed to tap into my mother's mind here; she was always reciting "little ditties" as she called them, and which had a gentle story-element to them.

Thank you Jemac; really glad you liked it. We have just one cat who occasionally displays an 'anti-hero' side to her nature, which maybe informed this poem a bit. I'd like to write more in this style but, you know, muse willing and all that ... :))

Hi brokentitanium, thank you for your enthusisatic response. I've never owned a dog but know many friends who do, and they're definitely loyal teachers.

Honoria, thank you again, and the RL. Really glad you liked it. 'Story poems' are what I'd really like to write more of. I find story-lines difficult to come up with though.

Dear J,
You’re on to something with this style writing. Flaming Ada., Love this character. Take no prisoners type of gal.
“ and that’s why round the world you’ll find
in peace-times and disaster
the stories of the couples who
live happily ever after“ I’m a sucker for a happy ending. Thank you so much for telling me about this piece. Love it! Need a book of these. H🌷

Happy endings ... hmmm ... thank you ... I'll hold that as the overall theme that whatever disasters may strike, a happy ending is always possible (given an appropriate understanding of the situation and a ritualistic completion).

I take it Wilf is wise as the years he's been given.
Excellent piece Josh.

That was very entertaining, Josh!! :)
You perfectly personified the 'cattitude'... that heir of superiority.
I always felt that cats see dogs as dumb brutes, heh. I loved the playful cadence... you did a nice job with the reading! Keep up the great writing <3

Thank you NewBeginnings, and for the RL. I'm glad you liked it - watching animals, and especially the interaction between cats and dogs, gives much 'source material' for poetry :))
