Getting By

She warned that she was damaged goods
Having stalked her evil ex
I still fell for her, and hard
My own transgressions twisted in the past
But never to be forgotten

Our overtures were tentative
Hers reserved and very cool
Mine just fumbled like an oaf
Still, persistent as a fiend
Attempting some of her gentility

We stuck together for five years
Two writers mutually amused
Penning reviews and feature news
Stringers barely paid a single dime

She headed south, and I remained
Drifted lost and down the hill
A fast car, some meth and booze
Finally a burn out landing on the street
On my head, and not my feet

She's now living like a modest queen
An old plantation home down south
Me, I'm still not exactly riding high
Fumbling lines, but I get by.
