Image for the poem Sussurance

Sussurance

Sussurance, susperia
A dancer on a rain-drenched night
The academy looming to her right
A face gazing from each window

She enters, welcomed with a chill
The three mistresses with sharpened smiles
Students frozen on the spot
Until the music starts

They begin like clockwork toys
Steps and gestures too precise
Eyes don't blink, begin to bleed
While "Swan Lake" sweeps them on their feet

The new dancer finds herself enthralled
Mesmerized by every move
They may be alive, or less
But if coaxed to stay, she will say "yes."

Suggested by the film "Susperia."
