Image for the poem she dares to fly

she dares to fly

she is not the sun. her passion burns her with a violence
that the heavens could not endure.

her eyes are true, like the horned owl’s, but vacant of stars;
she sees me as a man of flesh, a soldier who has suffered
& made poetry of it, who will suffer again when she goes.

she is not a sorceress, not a witch who can spell away a
drifter’s fears & regrets; but she is the forbiddance that
holds back the tears.

I have said she is fallen, but not from the caste of errant
angels who descend to this earthly garden, lured by amphora
wines & alehouse songs; who paint themselves in the
cosmetics & the shame of the harlot. she was born in a
different heaven.

she holds the lullabies of children in her hands; she bears the
scars of men who have loved her for a season. or a night.

she has given herself to me without pretense of garment, not
the slightest veil, & by that revelation, I know what beauty is.
and I have seen no other art.

her dreams are voyages that will carry her to exotic lands, they
are tales untold, great novels of adventure & romance. she will
write them in her heart…

  I will never say farewell
you’ll come back to me one day
