The Latest Tenant
This morning there was an empty bed on the ward
I'd woken up a couple of times during the night
with the sound of a terrible groaning
and rushing feet, followed by curtains closing
machines bleeping and nurses gasping
at nine o'clock the cleaner came
changed the bed clothes and pillow cases
wiped down the locker and the floor tiles
then at half past, the bed was taken again
and the nurses greeted the new man with a smile

A poignant observation you have there, Craic.
The short, almost brutal lines are very fitting to what you have described.
It's a wonder that no one thought of how this affects the other patients...

Atakti,
Ahh, I'm the lucky one y'know, I'll be leaving here tomorrow all going well. I have a genuine sense of pity for most of this ward . I'm not that hard that I wasn't affected by the happenings but I have to try and dissconect myself from it y'know? I figured jotting it down would go some way to.doing that.
Thank you kindly for reading and commenting dear Lady, I really hope I haven't stirred any sadness in you.

Very concise, and what struck me most, was the clinical inhumanity. Hospitals, funeral homes, hospices, are all a constantly shifting machine. Except those same smiling faces doing the welcoming. The lack of emotion is pretty clever and powerful. Hospital's doing you wonders; you should stay longer. :)

Mr A ,
That's pretty.mich the essence of what I was trying to get across , though I was thinking more indifference ( especially with the cleaner) than inhumanity. I agree about the constantly shifting machine, it struck me pretty hard today.
I do have infinite respect for.the nurses who deal with thos machine everyday and can still smile.
Appreciate the stop by and words sir , many thanks

As I read this Eamonn, you made me wonder who now occupies my Da's hospice bed, capturing the cycle of life exquisitely.
Fine piece of writing here in my opinion. :)

A deeply moving and painful poem, painted with deceptively simple colours which relate a coldness that grips the bones like a fever. The fact that you don't personify the human source of the "terrible groaning" accentuates a quiet, efficiently inhumane atmosphere, though I don't read this as a comment on nurses or hospitals so much as simply the human condition and its occasional blackness. Great work, Eamo. Thank you for the read.

Jack, ol' Bean
Well, that's quite the coment sir, possitivly poetic in its own right.
Yeah, I'd be looking at it as an observation. Something that happens, no real right or wrong here just eyes on a situation and fingers on a keyboard.
Thanks for your eyes on this Jack, as you know I had no idea of its worth.

Meanwhile there is a nurse in the break room, sobbing her eyes out, while she wonders if there was more that she could have done.
Very real and telling observation of the happenings...from the outside looking in. So sad you had to witness that...truly.
I always think about what the other patients must go through when/if they witness a code...how scary and humbling that must be for them.
Thank you for the share and I am so glad that you are doing better!

Rachel,
Yeah, certainly there's the other side of the coin. I'm glad you said it. I found the nurses to have an extraordinary resolve under preasure. Tough line of work Nurse Rachel.
Appreciate the drop by and words Rachel, thanks

You have described what is now common. Whether in Canada, with Universal Health Care or in the USA, with Insurance companies there is a rush to get you in and out as fast as they can. Sorry to hear you were sick...hope that you are getting better. Thank you for sharing.

Kitty,
here, the situation is partly because Hospitals are being closed down with more people needing them, you'd think basic math would be a requirement for a minister for health.
Thanks for dropping by and leaving your thoughts.

A cold reality Eamonn, from the bed to the freezer. I've never liked hospitals and signed myself out when they wanted me to stay once.
Speaks volumes this ditty does. Nicely done. :)

Having worked in this kind of setting, it's very hard on you, emotionally, to see death daily. If you don't find a way to shut down, you will drown.
Glad you are better:-)

G,
sorry, missed this one as well.
God, this place is full of nurses :) yeah, I imagine it's the sort of line of work that will either make you really strong or leave you a twitching wreck.
thank you kindly for stopping by, G and for leaving your thoughts.

I can remember when I worked as a Nurse Aid in a nursing home how quickly patients who passed were moved out and another moved it. You have captured this in your piece. Great work.

Sherrie,
wow, another nurse. I'm thinking pretty must be a basic requirement for the profession.
yeah, I think maybe we'd rather not see things so raw. If we had a loved one that needed the bed quick, I doubt we'd mind finishing off one of the patients ourselves to get them a bed faster.
thanks for dropping by this place and leaving your thoughts. much appreciated
