POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Inspired by life, literature, love and music.
Modern Day Caligula
(a sonnet)
He is a modern day Caligula
Ranting how he should be back on the throne
Screaming loud you can see his uvula
As the orange paint doesn’t match the tone
His deception game has quite the brilliance
Something's wrong, one can see it in his eyes
He’s been able to hypnotize millions
Followers swallow bukkakes of lies
It’s sad when masses heed to a mad man
It passes for normal without disdain
It’s a plain train wreck waiting to happen
But the senseless idiot has gone...

An Array of Hues and Colors
The shapeshifter, the trickster
The far-reaching long-winded tongue twister
I alter dispositions and can falter in different temperaments
With metaphors I metamorph
Assimilating between what’s mine and yours
Willing to evolve and transform through these experiments
The Gemini in between him the I
Shifting personalities from eye to eye
When the feeling swings depending on the environment
If I catch the beat I also feel the heat
I may play it back and then just put it on repeat
In contrasting shades of truth, I try to find...

The Long and Cold
I had to talk a man down away from the edge
The precipice below is dark and dangerous
I had to take some harmful things away
Now the descent feels every bit as lonely
The long and cold night send shivers up the spine
All the unknowns play a daring game of chess
Calculations can’t be made until the day breaks
And even then, the risks seem impossible to take
But love sometimes makes the mind go numb and blind
How far can one tread the path without sound logic?
Will emotions cloud the ability to make clear decisions?
Will they...

Radio Silence
It’s not that I don’t mind the radio silence
But rather the reasons why
Especially between us
But when choosing to give me this kind of treatment
I tend to question the true motives
And at who’s advice
Is it for punishment?
To make me overthink?
To send a deafening message that resonates in my ears?
I often find myself pondering on questions
With the only answer I can think of
“Just give it time”
I’d prepared myself for the unknowns
I thought about the consequences my actions could bring
But I never burn...

Laughter
The other day I made my son read a tricky tongue twister of a poem
And he laughed like he hadn’t laughed in such a long time
He struggled and spat and tried and spat some more all over the phone
It was a verse full of elaborate alliteration and constant rhyme
In the mornings my wife and I have interesting conversations
I wake her up with quips and gags saying things that are kind of…improper
I even make myself the butt of the joke and walk into them
As she laughs I’m left I wondering why I’m not such a panty dropper
Everyday I send...

The Baker
I told her I’d love to eat her poundcake
But today she wasn’t in the mood to bake
And I the hungry fool
Slowly began to drool
Oh why can’t I just catch a simple break?
Then I wanted muffins with sweet cherries
But the pantry was all out of berries
My desire I voiced
I want something so moist
And thicker than all my dictionaries
Then I started to crave some hot buns
And asked: “Baby are you catching these puns?”
She was not hot but bothered
I’m about to get clobbered
My toying gets annoying by the tons

From Across the Bridge
Love and thoughts have power beyond the physical realm
They call to us with a spiritual and emotional connection
Because in the land of the living, while they cry and grieve
Those of us from across the bridge still feel their affection
Sometimes their prayers sound like distant echoes and questions
While those of us from across the bridge smile at their supplications
Wishing that they would adhere to our old advice and suggestions
Hoping they share our stories and lessons with the new generations
From across the great void sometimes we hear...

Sugar Skull House
When I got to the bathroom there’s a sugar skull staring at me
Or if I’m cooking and grab a towel, another is there to dry my hands
Whether I walk in the hallway, sit in my living room or type at my desk
Hanging on the walls or on my bed, sugar skulls are everywhere
My house is a tribute to the dead
All year round like a station downtown where the train is about to leave
And when our ancestors visit us in dreams
We share the memory and stories of those we once grieved
For my wife’s grandfather, they had birthday parties on Halloween

A Letter to the Host
My passion plays persuades and prepares a person to be pervaded
Professing a proverbial posture on performance and proclamation
But perhaps not all people are particularly perceptive to the principle
As such was the protocol politely pressed for this presentation
Please pardon my previous prevaricate and preemptive poem posted
I did not properly proofread the preconditions so plainly provided
You asked for P’s and my piece perturbed the peace and so to appease…
I present a more appropriate prose to replace the previously presided
