Poetry Contest

Write a poem based on a poem of Edgar Allan Poe that you like.
I've always liked Poe and his darker style writing. I especially love his work after his wife died,  and he is said to become unstable.
I would love to see some work inspired by his later poems, but anything goes. Only two entries per poet.
Good luck!

A Mysterious Encounter

thunder clapped and lightning flashed
smell of ozone in the air
then the rain began to fall
buckets of it not a drizzle

running as hard as she could
towards the shelter in the wood
just a few metres off the road
gasping she made it inside

a cough startled her
looking around she saw a man
shivering cold in wet clothes
he smiled at her saying sorry

she sat on the floor
of the leaky hut
they looked at each other
listening to the falling rain

his name was Jim, aged of 30
had a scar on his cheek
his dad once punched him
for some mistakes long ago

she laughed at his jokes
listen to his tale of faraway land
how he ended up at the hut
she never thought to ask

the man reclined against the wall
looking tired and unwell
she listened to the rain
as he went to sleep

dusk came and she woke up
the day was sweetly darkening
she looked around for Jim
he was gone like silent air

she skipped happily home
her mother gave her an earful
for her wet uniform and books
late from school again

she never told anyone
of meeting the man in the hut
one day she accidentally stumbled
on a lone gravestone just nearby

a suicide, he was never buried
in hallowed ground
he killed himself for losing
his sweetheart and baby girl

he drove his car into a tree
when he was very drunk
celebrating his fifth anniversary
he killed his family.

DAWN NOW GONE

Leaves flew wistfully with ease down upon us in the autumn breeze
Her smile as its growing and glowing frees all that her and my eyes sees
Fair lady Dawn dancing through the flawless morning fields
awake with wonder, and won with rhyme
knowing all these moments will die in time
with Dawn forever gone

Butterflies kiss princess's noses as I pick the prickly roses
smelling sweet incense as laughter lingers upon a bath of bloodied fingers
The sun drifts down as I kiss my Dawn and endless hours carry on
a delicate flower within a blind disguise, dancing within a shower of our own demise
and all these moments will fade away
as Dawn drifts further away

The dusk brought about its glistening grin as dark light brought out soft stars from within
painting a brilliant contrast of sin upon Dawn's darkened new world to begin
Animals embracing in a feral retreat of two bodies entwined and facing defeat
as the dawn yawned behind us as it waited before us in the darkness of love and lust
deep in the forest
My Dawn now gone

in the darkness of love and lust deep in the forest

Grey Rain

Grey Rain

Let
me find you
the unsung songs
hidden in the deepest sea

Bring you the wicked souls of night
split from the morning dew

Let’s sit on tombstones and sing to the remains in the grave
Feel the cold rain drops on the faces while we look up at the grey

Come with me sweet princess let’s burn down more cathedrals
Walking through the flesh of the young bodies with their clerical wardrobes

Smoke mist up the atmosphere making a dream to celebrate our love
Let’s build a citadel for our selves with the skulls and bones
Decorate the walls with in shades of skin tones

I will be the darkness to your light
I will be the one to hold you tight
I will be in the front row in your fight

Now sleep tight sweetie,
and leave your
night mares
to me

Goodnight My Moonflower

One dreary day a flower
grew in a baren landscape,
soon over grown and gray.
All the flowers rotted away,
leaving ghostly perfume
and misty dreams for those
who came to pick the flowers.

As the night fell upon the fields
of ghostly petals,
one grew above the others.
It was a Moonflower.

Like the others
soon the Moonflower
withered and died.
Never to set eyes on the morning sky.
Now I cry while the rain falls slowly.

My Own Prison

wandering
the void
I inhaled the
darkness
to survive,
feeding the
emptiness
to grow
as my
hunger for
emotions
strove

my dear anger,
hide yourself
moreover, let the
innocence shriek
the dark moon is
here to judge us
sniffing our
weakening reek

be strong,
my lonely
passion
I won't
give up
the fight
can someone,
teach me
to relive a dream?
because it lasts
only a night

I bled sorrow
I cried blood
my tears ran out,
feeding your
ignorance

I’m melting
to the torridness
outside your wall
pour me into a jar
and keep me in
your cold heart

IN GUISE OF MADAME BOVARY

In the grip of doom neath missionary moons
She wept at crypts designed by those miscreants
Who wove tales of Hell that beguiled her there
To pages of mages, Sadomasochristian prudes in sooth
Follow the drifter, cemetery shifters
With a rose in hand, blacker than the god-damned
Portents of love that have turn a blind eye
To the loneliness at the graves of her beautiful kings

She remembers a time
When the stars loved her so
Now the scars remind her
Of the thorn's viscous bite

In guise of Madame Bovary
And her fanciful queries
Love and death were one in the same
Dancing within the candle's flame
In guise of Madame Bovary
In crepuscule quarries
Love and death just like guilt and shame
Dancing within the candle's flame

She doth long to forget
Those dull nights of her life
She loves the way that God
Gives her the devil's lust

Warm throes when midnight lovers cum in pale light
Blank verse in curse scribed before the raven's hearse
Trials of parts of hearts told tales Grimm with dark
Mourned moistened thighs poisoned, she has found everything pure and full
Romance the creeper, defying the reaper
Her garden of stone, faceless corpses and bones
The dead stand erect forgotten in time
Carrion wait in vespers to honor her spiteful name

She was like Madame Bovary
The Sabbath, quite contrary
Virtue and sin, one in the same
Like shadows dancing for the flame
She was like Madame Bovary
Libertine, Mother Mary
Venom dripped from cunted shame
Sheep blood fucking for the flame

The menstrual discharge is exquisite
On the shaft of the holy crucifix
Jesus came when his name was moaned by her
Infernal lips of heretical love
Venus enthralled her as Aphrodite
Drove a stake in the chest of Philistines
From tragic Draculas to Frankensteins
Here at the edge of her reality

Victorian estates, various altered quakes
From bulls to wolves and satyrs enchant the gulf
Where Tristan's cold state of failure's trysts and
Gravestone rites, bitter nights, Romeos and Romeros invoke
Hauntings of poets reciting their laments
Casting her fortune, in love with the exhumed
Ghosts that never pass beyond the veil
Of tears where her heart beats where ravens sing "Nevermore"

She was like Madame Bovary
The Sabbath, quite contrary
Virtue and sin, one in the same
Like shadows dancing for the flame
She was like Madame Bovary
Libertine, Mother Mary
Venom dripped from cunted shame
Sheep blood fucking for the flame

In guise of Madame Bovary
And her fanciful queries
Love and death were one in the same
Dancing within the candle's flame
In guise of Madame Bovary
In crepuscule quarries
Love and death just like guilt and shame
Dancing within the candle's flame

EUREKA
(Edgar Allan Poe 1809 - 1849)

Giving a purer sense to the
Dialect of the tribe, to get

The ecstasy and the heightening
Of the drug, the indolence, to

Lay hands upon all other hands
That I could, the sensation of

Ev'ry experience that I could,
The challenge of not only reading

But solving me, a draft of speech
of a lurid existence

Grown ashen and sober, this star
With pallor I mistrust - hasten,

Let us not linger,
Let us fly, for we must.

Oh! That my young life were a lasting dream!
My spirit not awakening till the beam
Of an Eternity should bring the morrow

Lest the night be senescent
With the moon of its crescent,
Disrobed and fallow in its sorrow.

This poem's title is inspired by the title of a lengthy prose treatise by Poe.
