Poetry Contest

Write a poem about a fun fact you know. It does not need to be long. It can be about anything as long as it is fun and true. Humor is encouraged.
This is my first competition idea but I hope you like it. I wrote a poem called Spalax which could serve as inspiration.

Fun facts...and trivia

The Columbian World Fair of 1893 in Chicago
Was to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.
Oooops.
Due to the fact that it followed the Paris World Fair of 1889
It had to be four years later, so 1893.
Also: Paris had the new Tower to show.
Chicago wanted to go One Up.
Taller, bigger.
They selected George W. G. Ferris'
Wheel.

Linked by No Blinks

“Whether you realize it or not, you blink around 20 times per minute.”

Eyes peeled,
With caffeine free

Insanity,
No twenty winks

Of sleep,
No twenty blinks,

Just:

A creeping slink
Of a seeping

Think
Tank for the

Unblinking
Blank

Bank of no blinks in which to sink.

And it’s funny.

The Harvest Ingathering

The Harvest had just begun at a Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Brother and Sister Brown arrived there early in fancy clothes.
The stingy couple did not bring any gifts for the Harvest.

A mouthy deacon with prying eyes approached them at the gate.
“Good morning, Brother and Sister Brown,” he said heartily.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown politely returned the greeting.

The inquisitive deacon immediately asked Mrs. Brown,
“Why did you and your husband come here with empty hands?”
“You didn’t even bring a dozen eggs for the harvest,” he added.

Mr. Brown said nothing, but his wife bluntly replied,
“I can’t lay; neither can Mr. Brown, so how the hell could we get eggs?”
And this was the funniest joke at the harvest Ingathering.

There was a time when the virus was seriously deadly

Some people rejecting mandates to wear a mask,
being forced to take a vaccine.

Democrats  for mandates
While republicans rejected

Mother Nature evolving the virus in the untamed wilds of the birthplace of Elon Musk,
South Africa, which offered to the world
A virus that was fifty times more infective -forget the common mask, this virus variation would slip right on by and infect its' victim.
The miracle was that the new virus was also fifty times less deadly.

It swept thru the nations and lands of the world
Infecting,
but also giving immunity

It was like each and every anti vax rebel
Got vaxxed.
And that, my friends, is why the virus is no longer stacking up the dead like cordwood

Why the world,
for the most part,
Has opened up.

Eternal sunset and lakes of fury

Brightly she shines in our night sky;
her name the goddess of love.
Once Earth's twin –
similar in size and structure –
her hellish heat
and sulphuric sky
have rendered her an evil monster.

Cloaked in a carbon dioxide blanket,
her acid rain, violent volcanoes
and lakes of lava run rampant;
their heat unable to escape
the scorching surface.
No seasons serve to cool or calm.

Even the night
offers little respite
from the soaring heat
and you could be forgiven for thinking
that night-time might last for ever.
With no moon to light the sky,
the planet plunges into darkness,
save for its own continued
volcanic activity.

Still, were you to
survive the four-month journey,
the noxious clouds,
the crushing atmosphere
and ferocious temperature,
you would be rewarded
with a sunset which never ends.

It's only on Venus
that you could walk fast enough
to keep the sunset in your view
for ever and ever.
Should you tire and rest,
the sun will finally set
so very slowly.

And with a Venusian day
lasting longer than a year,
you'll have a long, long wait
until a smudge of yellow on the horizon
signals a new dawn,
as finally the sun begins its ascent
in the West.

Sequential Hermaphrodites

Now that I got your attention…

Did

You

Know

That...

Clownfishes (or Anemonefish)
First develop as male
But when they mature
They become female

I guess nature has a way of teaching us lessons
Transformation happens everywhere
In different species
Across various groups

And now you know

POETRY'S FUN FACTS

Learning about some fun facts is very educational. You learn things you didn't know, and some are mind-blowing.

I decided to stick with poetry and discover other new truths about it. I found lots that left my mouth gaping.

Like understanding that poetry is actually from a Greek term poiesis, which means "making".

Poiesis has the meaning of making art or creating something in artistic form.
It’s a little like drawing, but with writing. The words used in poetry are often written differently than in actual text, so they make for a great way to learn.

Also learning that the longest ever poem in the whole world is the Mahabharata. An Indian epic poem dating from the 4th century or earlier. The poem has about 1.8 million words.
Now that is impacting to know a poem was that insanely long. I love long poetry and love writing them long but now I realize mine doesn't compare to the Mahabharata. Now that's a really fun fact to know.
