SELF POEM

Island?
It's not worth the effort,
so never think that
we need other people;
experience has shown that
we can manage alone,
contrary to thinking
relationships are everything,
I choose to believe that
independence
trumps
interdependence
because
I am an island, just like in the song
so I'll stop thinking that
my social skills are broken.
it's just not true that
everybody needs someone
and this is OK:
I rely on myself
and can't honestly say
I need you.

so never think that

Who am I?
I was there in the beginning
and I will be there at the end.
I am present throughout time and space,
and to the ends of the Earth.
I exist in other parts of the universe;
also in heaven and in hell,
inside and outside,
and within everybody.
I am in your home,
although not among the doors and windows,
and I am particular
about the rooms I inhabit.
You cannot see me
and many people do not know of me,
but I exist inside their heart.
Who am I?

I am a mystery number
between one and ninety nine;
in fact, I have two digits,
and I am not a prime.
When you add me to the number
of spots upon two dice,
divide me by eleven
and add on two score (twice),
subtract a baker's dozen,
times the days within one week,
minus days in a leap year,
it just adds to the mystique.
Halve your current total,
then subtract three score and ten;
if the answer's quite unlucky,
what is MY name then?

My first is in bath but not in shower;
my second in strength, and also in power.
My third is in sister and also in brother;
my fourth is in father but never in mother.
My fifth is in short and also in tall;
my sixth is in shout but never in call.
My whole can be found in the land of the living.
though not in the dead, for its gift is life-giving;
stirs music to being, yet can kill a flame;
you have all your clues now, so what is my name?

To-do list, silo dot
My family had so much to do, I thought that I'd assist,
and so I just sat down and wrote them each a little list.
But strangely, as the lists went on, I could not write a word
without employing palindromes. It's really quite absurd!
MUM
(shopping list):
naan,
taco, cat,
evil olive,
no melons? no lemon!
hmm. Mmh...
yam? I may.
tuna, a nut,
UFO tofu,
dessert (stressed!)
DAD
(jobs):
Run rotor. Nur!
Repaper.
Reward drawer:
eye level. EYE!
Nip rotator pin.
Racecar: ...
and so I just sat down and wrote them each a little list.

A Close Encounter
My uncle, for my birthday, takes me to the local zoo.
I want to see the tigers and the baby kangaroo!
There's loads of stuff to do here; which mammal to see first?
I'm so very excited that I feel like I might burst!
First, a very handsome camel is majestic yet aloof;
then some cheerful dolphins splash me; glad I have my waterproof!
Ten orangutans are playing on some rope that has been strung;
we sit and watch an emu, tending to her precious young.
We see a gorgeous possum, in impressive form;
then cool down in the reptile house, because...

The Relay Race/ Teacherly Era/ Archery Elate
I felt left alone
in my dusty study,
but my aide had an idea.
We asked a friend to refind
her sporting form, from years before.
We had to layer up early for the relay.
We filed into a field.
It was a pest to step around pets,
coming to a stop at the right spot;
We had to be silent, listen, then enlist
other athletes for the race, with care;
those who would begin by being fair,
for to live under the veil of evil is vile!
Starting off on a good note set the right tone.
When hewn
from stone, a trophy hits all the right...

Ode to JBO
Thank you, good and faithful servant—
you got us from A to B, to C, to Z and beyond,
and always brought us home again safely.
I'm sorry for the times I've complained
about having a car older than my marriage
(although, now approaching my silver wedding anniversary,
that's some going!).
I plan to nurse you along for the rest of your days,
take care of you, the way you have taken care of us.
So many memories!
So many things we like about you,
but the best of all,
your registration plate: JBO.
In my mind, it stood for an anagram of...
you got us from A to B, to C, to Z and beyond,
and always brought us home again safely.

Are you coming to my party? It's going to be so great!
Just walk on in, or run, or catch a lift with someone's mate.
Two friends are at the station - bravo, let's go and pick them up;
we'll bring them to the party and then let them choose a cup.
There's a flag out in the garden so you know where it will be;
There'll be such fun that you won't want to stop, I guarantee!
I'll put on games and serve great food for sure, but first a guess:
who's here as guest of honour and is going to address
the reason for this gathering, so joyous...
