POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
'Awaiting the Dawn: poems of hope for life's journey' (EAE Jackson) is available on Amazon worldwide. I write a lot about the darker side of the human condition, the restorative powers of nature, and the need to have hope.
Look sharp, or you'll be flat
Right.
Next on the list is F minor.
Flats, you say?
Yes, four. B, E, A and D.
We'll start with the melodic.
Coming down, it's easy -
you do what it says on the tin.
Play all of the flats,
kind of like descending in A flat major.
So what do we need to do on the way up?
Sharpen the sixth and seventh notes.
So you have D flat and E flat,
but in the melodic minor scale,
they become flatrals.
Flatrals?! I mean, naturals!
Those flats are sharpened,

Recovery
The world had grown so small.
Through necessity, it remained thus for a while
and then slowly, I began to nudge at its edges.
Slowly proved to be too fast;
my patience too impatient.
Progress varied from slight, to good,
to backwards, and then good again.
Determination and exercise held the keys
to unlock the world as I once knew it.
Over time, some doors reopened,
expanding my horizons.
A semblance of normality returned
and with it, energy for reading,
walking, swimming, talking, teaching.

Star
As
one
with a
name meaning Star, I’ve considered
it something that would be
lovely to live up to.
As I’ve got older,
I’ve come to realise
that there are many ways in which
to shine.

The only way?
With change unexpectedly thrust upon me,
I cannot help but wonder:
was it always bound to turn out like this?
As the isolated structure I built around myself
crashes down with devastating force,
the world opens wide and I stand, vulnerable;
no walls or distance for protection
and nothing set to replace them,
save for the words and optimism of others.
I'm not ready;
I'll never be ready,
but sometimes the only way forward
is Through.

Rainbow tears
Do not despair at these tears that fall
for they neither mourn nor self-pity.
They are cleansing, refreshing streams of great beauty
even though you cannot see that yet.
When lessons have been learnt and healing comes;
when the sun shines upon my face once more,
they will radiate all the colours of the rainbow.
Iridescent; multi-faceted;
they fall upon fertile soil
and water the seeds you have sown.
Have patience and see what grows from them—
it's going to be BEAUTIFUL.
for they neither mourn nor self-pity.
They are cleansing, refreshing streams of great beauty
even though you cannot see that yet.

Growth
Please tell me
so that I might know.
Please explain
so that I might listen.
Please show me
so that I might understand.
Please trust me
so that I might grow.
so that I might know.
Please explain
so that I might listen.
Please show me
so that I might understand.
Please trust me
so that I might grow.

First dimension
Though present in the here and now,
visually unchanged, personality intact,
part of me has slipped into a new reality.
Perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise;
I've navigated the unfamiliar before
but this is DIFFERENT.
People ask how it is going
and in some ways it's fine.
I can talk and relate just as well as before.
It's just hard to know how things are
when the points of reference keep

When all else fails... try it in poetic form

Late night insight
Some say I'm incorrigible,
ill-disciplined, hypocritical
and a bad example.
Others call it
Revenge Bedtime Procrastination.
Whichever you believe, it's true;
I'm largely unable (or unwilling)
to go to bed.
When responsibilities of the day
and of work and family life
fall away;
when everyone is asleep
and the house is silent,
I reclaim my solitude
and find that
night time is a creative time.
Without distractions,
the words line up more pleasingly.
Without noise,

L'inconnu
Il faut que j'entre dans l'inconnu;

Fermata
They say the music stopped that day,
and in a sense that's true.
I prefer to imagine that you're still playing,
restored in body,
with the vigour of youth.
You played elaborate organ,
graceful oboe,
powerful piano,
and as professionals together,
our collaborations soared;
somehow more than their two parts.
Beyond the veil,
we can no longer play together,
and so I arranged something in your name.
The three girls and I performed it for you
but it felt like you were there
