What am I?
Am I something
or nothing?
A state of Being,
or just recognised
for my effect on other things?
Theoretically, I exist -
you know that I do.
OK?
Scientifically, I remain
tantalisingly
out of reach.
You can speculate
about how matter behaves
but you're just
not quite there.
Mathematically,
have you factored in
my multiple factors
(both positive and negative) -
accurate to a certain degree,
at least,
in more ways...

Wormhole
I want to
wake up
in
another dimension;
anywhere but here.

Musical meanderings 1: A bad café
A café? Gee—
be fed!
Decaf, fadge, egg, beef.
Caged egg: bad.
Bagged fadge: egad!
Decaf: add caf!!
Gad. Bad feed!
Bad café.
Gagged.
Feedbag: add cabbage.
Fab!
Begged a cab;
bagged a cab.
Each cab ebbed.
Cadged a bed—
a beaded bed.
Ace!
Fee added;
cad!
Facade faced,
badge badged
gab gabbed.
Faced a bad deed:
face cabbaged!
Gaffe,
Dabbed face.
Each decade,
age faded,
ebbed,
ceded.
Fade, dada...
a babe!
be fed!
Decaf, fadge, egg, beef.
Caged egg: bad.
Bagged fadge: egad!
Decaf: add caf!!

hello, hillbillies
hello, hillbillies!
hellhole hobbies:
hobos hobble,
hogs goggle,
geese gobble,
globes glob,
gobs gibe.
oboe solos ooze goos,
solo oboes lose shoes.
obese bees see sieges;
seize silos,
sigh sighs,
hie highs,
lie lies.
legible legs
lob lollies,
log goggles,
hog hollies.
isles slosh soil.
gosh - oil!
sillies sell lilies,
shell eggshells,
gel lobbies.
big bozos bob,
belles boogie - bosh!
eligible elegies ebb,
glib...

When in Rome...
Some years ago, a child was born
one April, just before the dawn.
She had huge eyes of navy blue;
her hair: a rusty, reddish hue.
She grew up with a thirst for knowledge
(not just the type you'd learn in college)—
numbers, silly signs, world weather;
puzzles, both absurd and clever.
A woodwind teacher by profession,
she also had in her possession
ocarina, fife, trombone,
piano, Xaphoon, xylophone!
Now, to find her year of birth,
you have the clues, for what that's worth.
You need twelve...

Vortex
Mesmerising whirlpool,
deceptively strong—
your power a source of
fascination and horror
in equal measure.
Time and again,
I've watched others swim—
some remaining on the periphery;
others venturing further in;
but most being drawn,
inexorably,
towards your axis
and their zenith,
or nadir,
depending on your viewpoint.
One thing I do know
is that the inward journey is swift;
spiralling ever faster, by definition,
while the journey out
requires patience, time
and determination.

Broken pieces
2009
"Apply beneficial caution!" directed Estelle,
from great hardship
(ice just keeps leaving me nervous!).
"Observe! Please quit running!"
(Snow, tripped under vendor's window—
xtreme yelling zone!)
2024
Zip your x-rayed wound very unassumingly,
to start restoring
quintessential promise
of now-metallic limb.
Know joint injuries have great fallout,
ergo: don't consider
breaking
another!

You could be forgiven for thinking all was well;
for failing to read the signs
that a storm would visit imminently.
But against the backdrop of a curious calm
was a sense that something had shifted.
The sky crackled with a strange electrical charge
just moments before torrential rain
began to pulverise the buildings;
an urgent hammering,
while the wind howled in anguish.
We stood resolute, silent, through the hideous squall,
unable to take cover inside;
powerless to arrest it in its tracks.
Finally, the worst was over.

Rush hour
I'm in a pit of rising anxiety.
Every lane is rammed.
Nobody is cooperating
and rain beats down.
The engine thrums, driving my panic
(pun intended).
Clearly I know
that it's rush hour,
and it continues to worsen.
Add dehydration
and its sinking, metallic sensation to the mix.
Naturally, every light is red
and your reaction is going to
fuel the day-old headache.
It's easy to see why
I'm feeling complete panic
with all this mental noise.
I can already sense your angry words;
the thought...

alien game
dangerous company;
cadaver explosion.
hide down low.
rotten ruin, despise us.
stop chaos; burn anguish instead.
can a hostile world
assume knowledge;
promise more?
delight is our treasure box
or wish to attain
elaborate power revolt.
high chemical charge,
evolve heat.
require art.
go robustly;
apply influence;
forge spirit today.

The Schrödinger's Cat in Ralph's Hat
Poor Ralph is a stick man
who's looking annoyed;
your attention is all that
keeps him from the void.
But Ralph does have a cat
(whose condition's unknown);
it's shut in a box
so let's leave it alone.
If Ralph is not here
then he must be out there.
He's wearing a hat
but his bottom is bare!
Quick! Call the police!
And instruct them to dash—
if we don't intervene,
he's going to flash!
There goes Ralph down the street;
do you think he'll get caught?
If not, he'll just vanish— ...

Missing
Not so very long ago,
I did not know I needed you.
None of us did—
it's hard to miss someone you never knew.
Now, your absence looms large
every time you leave.

it's hard to miss someone you never knew.
Now, your absence looms large
every time you leave.
